two things were dangled in front of bts for the longest time. military exemption and the grammy. and in both cases they took the reins of the systems that tied them to exploitative schemes with the promise of a reward that was always just out of reach. hope they feel lighter now
adele is not american yet she beat beyonce in 2017. why didn’t they make a british grammy for her ? why did they make a traditional country category when beyonce won? “asian” is even not a genre and it’s not just limited to kpop. segregating music by ethnicity is fucking WEIRD
As a Singaporean Chinese, if I write and produce a pop song in Singapore incorporating Malay traditional melodies and Indian traditional instruments but write English lyrics, I’m just not Asian enough for the Grammys Asian Pop category
Under these new rules, a song like My Universe could be changed from pop duo/group to Asian Pop. BWL, which should’ve been…gets moved to Asian Pop. Basically to have a song stick for pop duo, it needs to be fully in English or not enough Korean to be “Asian”. Otherwise, Asian pop. This is why their stance matters. And yes, committees can change where a song is categorized.
This is so funny because it’s been such a lackluster year for music, I know the Grammys were banking on a bts appearance and performance. Lmaoooo it’s gonna be a shit show.
The main language in Singapore is English.
So which category are the Singaporean artists supposed to submit to @RecordingAcad ?
Or does your racist ass think they're all Chinese???
This is what I mean when I say that this category was slapped together with no real consideration for solid non-vague criteria. Because how can you leave in a loophole so big it could end up doing the complete opposite of its original intent? That's why it's such bs.
Ykw I just realized? Going by the description of the award on the Grammy site, the songs don't have to be sung by an Asian. Meaning if a Western act dropped an Asian language album that was widely recognized in Asia, they could qualify and push Asians out of their own category.
except for tablo from epik high, no peer of bts in k-pop supported bts today. an industry critic said that only bts could show this backbone and that k-pop has to bow down to the grammys. while bts wanted to protect the industry's pride, we learned that the industry has no pride.
BTS withdrawing from the nominations really got under the grammys skin to the point that they deleted the Butter and dynamite performances.. this is so embarrassing for them my god 😭😭
The way people will go out of their way to make an excuse any institution, group of people, etc that is playing the position of oppressor never ceases to amaze me. “The Biggest Night In MUSIC!” Ok..
The fact that someone put a community note on my post proves my point further 🤣
Waiting for the new Canadian Pop & UK Pop categories!!! I mean if it’s about shining a spotlight on as many people as possible .. and when will they start separating the categories by male and female??? I mean that could double the “recognition” immediately. I’ll be over here waiting!!! 🧐
@Variety Great pop music is great pop music, regardless of language, ethnicity, race. When are we ever going to banish these racist, xenophobic, artificially segregated categories?
It’s so very 1900s.
This is all so exhausting.
@Variety "A dedicated spotlight….."
Just not on the main stage.
Just not with equal weight.
BTS already declined the parallel table.
