This video is very disturbing in a community that has welcomed all, celebrated diversity, and stood arm and arm when marginalized communities were discriminated against, attacked and worse.
I'm calling on @prudeinc@SJNewcomersCntr @Y_SaintJohn to engage in conversation and education and help dispel disinformation. Your mission to promote @cityofsaintjohn as a diverse, inclusive and safe community needs your vocal and unwavering leadership in good times and bad.
Charter rights in Canada protect everyone, including the 2SLGBTQAI+ community. These rights are not a buffet but an unwavering commitment to equality and justice.
*UPDATE 1:33 PM*: As part of the ongoing police operation, #RCMPNB and other resources are now in the #EastBrighton and #LowerBrighton areas, southwest of #Hartland. Please avoid the area. Thank you for your cooperation.
Dear Premier Higgs, Minister Hogan, Ministers, MLAs,
I am writing to you today to urge you to take action to protect and support LGBTQIA2S youth in our community. The statistics show that these youth face significant challenges, including higher rates of mental health issues, suicide, poverty, homelessness, and discrimination.
According to a study by the Canadian Centre for Substance Use and Addiction, LGBTQIA2S youth are two to four times more likely to experience mental health issues such as depression and anxiety than their heterosexual peers. Additionally, a report by the Trevor Project found that LGBTQIA2S youth who come from unsupportive homes are eight times more likely to attempt suicide than those who come from supportive homes.
These statistics are alarming and cannot be ignored. As elected officials, you must protect and support all community members. This is why policies like Policy 713 are so important.
While some may argue that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is enough to protect LGBTQIA2S individuals, this fails to acknowledge the gaps in interpretation and that marginalized groups are not starting from a place of equality or equity in the first place. Policy 713 provides clear guidelines and protections for LGBTQIA2S individuals, ensuring they are not discriminated against in our schools. This environment plays a vital role in the development and future of young leaders.
I know firsthand the pressure of political life, making decisions that might appear unpopular, and the need to speak for marginalized groups. We live in very challenging times when communicating facts and pushing back against hate and discrimination.
LGBTQIA2S individuals face struggles that many could not imagine. In some cases, they feel unheard, unseen and unsupported. Please remember them, and acknowledge that many individuals donโt enjoy the same benefits and privileges as others.
There is no loss to cisgender individuals in this policy, this is not about recruiting members into a club, and this is not forced ideology. This policy describes, in detail, the steps that must be taken to give LGBTQIA2S2 individuals a fighting chance to survive and maybe even thrive.
I urge you to support and uphold Policy 713, and to work towards creating a safe and inclusive community for all members, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
Please feel free to give me a call to talk more about it.
@jeffcarr4nms@NBLA_ALNB@GreenPartyNB Better fact check your provincial history. New Brunswick has been decided along language issues since it's inception. Today's arguments are nothing new.
