I grew up in Holland MI, went to many Tulip Time parades beginning in elementary. So many women dressed as male Dutch Dancers. Today I realized it was my first drag show, the whole town comes out to celebrate. Was this grooming? Indoctrination? Is Holland the Mecca of drag?
i don’t watch the bachelorette because if i wanted to watch men compete to get engaged to a woman they just met i would just go to a bible college campus
I’m committed to racial justice because of the Bible, not in spite of it.
I’m egalitarian because of the Bible, not in spite of it.
I’m dedicated to liberation because of the Bible, not in spite of it.
I’m affirming of LGBTQ+ folks because of the Bible, not in spite of it.
sermon writing means having a thesaurus tab open to find another word for "rough" and a dictionary tab open to see if "unpredictabilities" is a real word.
I think all the seminaries should require students to join a little old ladies Bible study for at least a year or two. You will 1) learn a lot and 2) realize how much smarter they are than you and hopefully never forget it.
The moment I almost lost it during my sermon yesterday: when I looked down at a child in my congregation who was nodding along intensely while I mentioned the active shooter drills our school-aged children practice. This is our world. Lord, have mercy.
white evangelicals: it is now our constitutional right to pray in public
jesus: “when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others”
I’m often asked if narcissism in the church is a contemporary phenomenon.
No, it swims in the waters of imperialism, traffics in conquest, quietly proclaims manifest destiny, and cozies up to white supremacy.
This can’t simply be fixed with personality tests and a sabbatical.
Grief isn’t just for death. You can grieve losses of all kinds - relationship endings, moving on from a job or school program, parts of your childhood, etc. But one particularly nebulous form of grief is grieving an idea- a dream that won’t come true, a plan that must change.
The most theologically unified I’ve ever seen Twitter is people dunking on this random guy who shamed people for babies crying in church. Everything from 1689ers to Catholic ethicists to progressive anabaptists are challenging this guy. This is our ecumenical moment.
