Do you know who the most-followed artist on Spotify in the entire world is?

It’s not Taylor Swift.
It’s not The Weeknd.
It’s not BTS.

It’s Arijit Singh from India, with roughly 194 MILLION Spotify followers.

And that tells you something about how enormous Asian music is beyond what we commonly see represented in Western pop culture.

India alone has a massive multilingual music industry and major contemporary pop artists like Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla, AP Dhillon, Anuv Jain, Armaan Malik and Guru Randhawa, performing in Punjabi, Hindi and other Indian languages.

Now here’s something interesting about the inaugural Grammy Best Asian Pop Music Performance category:

So far, I haven’t found public confirmation that these major Indian pop artists submitted recordings to the category.

That does NOT mean they didn’t. The Recording Academy does not publish a complete public list of entries, so unless the artist, label or another reliable source confirms a submission, we simply don’t know.

But think about what this tells us.

When people discuss “Asian Pop” as though it were basically another name for K-pop, they’re overlooking an absolutely enormous musical landscape.

Asia is home to India, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and many more countries, each with its own languages, musical traditions and growing contemporary pop scenes.

The most-followed artist on Spotify is literally an Asian artist singing primarily in an Asian language.

Yet how many Western music listeners even know his name?

That, to me, is one of the most interesting possibilities of this new Grammy category.

SB19 submitting VISA isn’t about being put into a little “Asian” box. They’re putting a Filipino-language song into a field that could eventually expose Grammy voters to an enormous range of music they may rarely encounter.

So instead of only asking:

“Why does Asian Pop need its own category?”

Maybe we should also be asking:

“If Asian music is already this enormous, why have so many of us heard so little of it?”

So let’s stream VISA and make sure more people discover SB19!
