Because of the restrictions placed on women's rights and the lack of access to justice, God only knows how many more women like Liza Shams will become victims of domestic violence and abuse, with neither the opportunity nor the courage to speak about their suffering. Even if they wanted to speak out, who could they turn to?
When women are deprived of their fundamental rights, when husbands are officially given permission to beat their wives, when the doors to justice and protection are closed to women, and when there are no effective mechanisms to respond to domestic violence, perpetrators become further empowered. Beating and abusing a woman is not a right, it is violence and injustice. No human being should have the right to humiliate, abuse, or physically harm another person.
Cases like that of Liza Shams remind us that domestic violence destroys not only the life of a woman, but also the future and well-being of her children and family. Without effective systems to protect women and ensure accountability, the risk of similar tragedies will only continue to grow.
Women deserve dignity, safety, justice, and respect for their humanity. Let us stand on the side of compassion, conscience, and human dignity, and raise our voices against all forms of violence and abuse.
