Ramadan
This Ramadan, I believe it will be one of the most difficult times for those struggling to find enough to eat. We can seize this opportunity to help ourselves by reaching out to those in dire need of food.
Imam Ghazali teaches us in his book, Ihya Ulum ad-Din, that when we engage in such activities, we are helping ourselves, not just those receiving the charity. Charity is purification, and hence it is the poor person who has done us the favor.
Maulana Imam Maqary emphasized in his lecture last week that we should all understand that nothing is too small when it comes to charity. This is the best way to show gratitude to Allah (SWT) for the blessings bestowed upon us, more pragmatic than simply mentioning “Alhamdulillah” in zikr, because genuine intention is found in action.
In my personal opinion, I would advise that when helping people this Ramadan, we should endeavor to do it ourselves, if possible, rather than just sending a token to a charity organization. This will not only ensure accountability but also give us firsthand experience of the challenges people are facing, prompting reflection on the blessings of Allah upon us.
The Buddhist monks have a practice called Dhutanga, an ascetic practice undertaken to cultivate renunciation and simplicity. It is a voluntary act of offering food to the community directly as an expression of generosity and compassion. The act of giving out directly helps demonstrate generosity and empathy in action.
Finally, among the five matters that Imam Ghazali mentioned that we should be vigilant about regarding charity is secrecy. We should not turn the misery of others into a show. The Prophet (SAW) said in a hadith that is in al-Bukhari:
"The one who gives charity with his right hand while the left hand does not know, is one of the seven whom Allah will shade on the Day when there is no shade except His shade."
May Allah grant us the opportunity to witness Ramadan and enable us to benefit from the blessings that accompany it. Ameen.
