Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is these days accusing Eritrea for acts of "unprovoked aggression that may jeopardize regional peace and security".
Audacity and duplicity in their most extreme forms!
The indelible facts:
1. Ethiopia has in essence declared a war of aggression against Eritrea when its Prime Minister announced to his Parliament on 13 October 2023 that his regime will acquire "sovereign access to the sea, through negotiations if possible and by force if necessary".
2. As illustrated in the Press Release issued at the time (link below), Eritrea responded with exemplary restraint and equanimity to underline that it will not be provoked by these perplexing pronouncements and events.
3. In subsequent and repetitive campaigns to agitate and solicit support from his domestic constituencies to his war agenda, the PP's leader invoked "Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights" as a useful precedent for what he had in mind for Assab.
4. He went further to denigrate and deny Eritrea's independence by stating that "he could not find any legal documents in all Ethiopian Government archives - the Cabinet, Parliament etc. - in relation to Eritrea's independence".
5. His periodic and strident agitations included urging and reminding the Ethiopian Army that its core mission centered on "ensuring and maintaining the security of the Red Sea from the edge of Somalia to the Port of Massawa".
4. Taking their cue from the Potemkin Party's Chief, senior political and military officials dwelt on provocative statements on several public events; essentially to declare that they will correct the "historical mistake" and forcefully occupy the Eritrean port of Assab as well as its entire southern coastline to secure "strategic depth" to their phantom naval force.
5. And, on 27 September last month, the Ethiopian Army's Deputy Chief of Staff openly declared that "the offensive launched in Tigray will not stop there". He went on to state: "Mekelle is a mere stop-over, our ultimate destination is Assab; our main objective is to install our flag in the Red Sea".
6. The hysterical infatuation with the Red Sea must also be seen with previous intentions to wage a war of invasion against Eritrea but that were not publicly divulged at the time. Indeed, the PP regime did not only try to entice the TPLF to join forces for an invasion against Eritrea in confidential meetings in Djibouti and Seychelles during the Tigray War in early/mid 2022, but a confidential report issued by the EU Envoy after her visit to Ethiopia in September 2022 - a couple of months prior to the Pretoria Agreement - bluntly announced that the 2018 Peace Agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia had become "null and void". These were apparently sinister machinations to which Eritrea had no inkling at the time.
In brief, the Ethiopian regime has been pursuing, in effect, an unprovoked war of aggression against Eritrea for more than three years now in flagrant breach of foundational principles of international law and the UN Charter that prohibit the threat or use of force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of another Member State.

#Eritrea was never a part of the #Ethiopian nation, and any narrative that treats Eritrea as a simple territory seceded from #Ethiopia misrepresents its distinct history formation as an Italian colony and nation building processes, its forced federation and subsequent military occupation, and the legitimate political and protracted armed struggle of its people to restore its full #independence……
H.E. Martin Kimani, Assistant Secretary-General for #Africa in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO), paid a courtesy visit to @Eritrea_UN.
I congratulated him on his new assignment and assured him of #Eritrea’s continued cooperation and support in advancing peace, stability, and constructive regional engagement. We exchanged views on developments in the #HornOfAfrica and underscored the importance of sober and objective assessment of regional dynamics, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, and sustained dialogue with the @UN.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to clarify #Eritrea|s position on various issues of concern affecting the region. #Africa|s peace and security are indispensable to the continent’s development and progress. The lessons and mistakes of the past should inform our collective approach, and no #Africa|n State should have its voice or legitimate concerns marginalized in international deliberations. We agreed to remain engaged.
PRESS STATEMENT
Eritrea: Sovereignty Is Never an “Old Narrative”
The Embassy of the State of Eritrea in Washington, D.C. has taken note of the Middle East Forum article, “Eritrea’s Old Red Sea Narrative Meets a New Middle East,” published on 21 September 2026, in response to the interview granted by Eritrea’s Foreign Minister, Osman Saleh, to Middle East Eye.
……..The most important correction concerns its persistent and misleading description of #Eritrea as having simply “seceded” from #Ethiopia. This formulation is not merely imprecise; it reverses the historical sequence and obscures the legal and political circumstances through which Eritrea became an independent state. Addressing this issue is critical not only to refute the specific claims made by the @meforum , but also to correct a broader, pervasive myth. Eritrea was never a part of the Ethiopian nation, and any narrative that treats Eritrea as a simple territory seceded from Ethiopia misrepresents its distinct history formation as an Italian colony and nation building processes, its forced federation and subsequent military occupation, and the legitimate political and protracted armed struggle of its people to restore its full #independence………
The article presents a selective and fundamentally distorted account of Eritrea’s history and consequently mischaracterizes the basis of Eritrea’s contemporary position on the Red Sea.

Potemkin Party's characteristic behaviour of speaking with a forked tongue is again in full display.
In a Press Statement issued by the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry today in an apparent reaction to the El-Alamien Declaration, the PP pays lip-service to the pursuit of "peaceful engagement, mutual respect, and regional cooperation". It further urges "all regional actors to address shared challenges through constructive dialogue, partnership, and adherence to the principles of good neighborliness...".
But this is the crux of the matter.
The Potemkin Party's duplicitous antics aside, the prevailing tension that has gripped the Horn of Africa region emanates precisely from its perilous acts perpetrated over the past years and that violate international law and the prospects and opportunities of healthy regional cooperation.
Indeed, these are the poignant facts:
1. Ethiopia enjoys unfettered access to all ports in the Horn of Africa. In what can be termed as a "buyers market", it has extensive latitude to enter into mutually beneficial commercial agreements with all the coastal countries concerned. But the Potemkin Party chose to violate international law and the principles of good neighborliness to pursue an agenda of aggression and war against Eritrea to "acquire sovereign access to the sea".
2. As spelled out in previous public statements by its Foreign Ministry, the invasion of the Eritrean port of Assab must include the southern coastal zone too. In the PP's convoluted logic: "without the protective depth offered by the Dahlak islands, Assab remains an exposed coastal facility vulnerable to hostile naval power... any enduring arrangement for Ethiopia must therefore consider a dual reality: access to the coast and the strategic depth required to protect that access".
3. Similarly, the Potemkin Party has fomented unnecessary and avoidable tensions with Somalia and Sudan through willful acts that breach international law and impede regional cooperation. The illicit MOU that it signed with Somaliland in flagrant breach of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity; the all-rounded support that it continues to provide to the RSF under the bidding of the UAE are deplorable acts that have jeopardized regional peace and security.
Finally, Ethiopia's insinuation that some geographic proximity to the Red Sea entitles it with the rights and responsibilities of the littoral States is too ludicrous and hollow in purely legal terms to merit response.
Good Read - Beyond the Resource Curse: #Eritrea’s Path to Sustainable Development; by Bana Negusse
*"... Eritrea has established a clear regulatory and legal framework for the extractive sector that aligns with widely recognized international standards and draws on practices used in leading resource-producing countries. Within this framework, natural resources are viewed not as an end in themselves, but as one component of a broader national development strategy".
*"...Importantly, Eritrea’s policies emphasize national ownership and fair returns from resource extraction, including royalties and equity participation in mining projects undertaken in partnership with international companies. Firms from a range of countries are involved in exploration and development activities, operating within a regulatory system that also places strict requirements on environmental protection and social impact".

Guess who is lying?
A) Abiy claims Ethiopia built the controversial GERD dam without taking a single dollar in help or loans from anyone.
B) Trump repeatedly said Ethiopia’s large dam GERD is financed by the United States.
So, who do you think is lying?
Remember, Abiy also said in a different context that Ethiopia is a beggar nation that often lives off begging from everywhere.
In these chaotic times of New World of Disorder, where the @UN Charter & the sovereignty & territorial integrity of #GlobalSouth nations—of which #Somalia is the latest victim—are being trampled on, the People's Republic of #China must step up to the plate & do the right thing.
December does not, normally, fall within the ignominious calendar of Eri-Influenza Season when Eritrea's assorted detractors ramp up and spew their run-of-the-mill vilification campaigns against Eritrea. Indeed, the predictable "Eritrea-bashing" ritual is routinely unleashed in May (Independence Month); June (Martyrs Commemoration); and September (Beginning of the Armed Struggle for Independence).
But for reasons that are not hard to decipher, there is a tinge of Eri-Influenza in the air these days.
As it happens, Potemkin Party minions seem to be in cahoots with the usual cabal of notorious Conflict Entrepreneurs - ኣሃዱ ገናዞን ሓንጨመንጭን - to intensify their demonization campaigns against Eritrea. The underlying purpose is to shift gear and deflect attention from PP's toxic and brazen agenda of "sovereign access to the sea" by couching their subversive campaign in the language of "victimhood and self-defense".
The tools employed to this end revolve around:
1. Portrayal of Eritrea as a perpetual destabilizer of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa region. This is a hard sell for a regime that was profusely expressing, only three years ago, its profound gratitude - from the Prime Minister down to all sections of the Defense Establishment - to Eritrea for its principled support in Ethiopia's darkest times. PP's political and military officials are also on record on the origins and dynamics of the 1998-2000 Eritrea and Ethiopia border war that is grossly at variance with the spurious chorus that they are singing these days.
2. Eritrea's withdrawal from IGAD as "symptomatic of its isolationist agenda" and distaste for "multilateral forums". Again, this is too trite to merit much elaboration. But for the record, Eritrea was pivotal in expanding the restrictive mandate of IGADD (confined to combatting drought and desertification when it was established in 1986) to encompass a much more relevant and broader scope of regional economic cooperation and development as well as conflict prevention and resolution. Eritrea's conviction for a robust regional organization stemmed from, and was linked to, the more realistic and phased approach of Continental economic cooperation and integration through a modular process. But IGAD's abject and repetitive failures - its subservient position during the border war; its shameful endorsement of Ethiopia's unwarranted military intervention in Somalia in 2006; its muted reaction to the illicit Ethiopia - Somaliland MOU; its pathetic silence in the face of Potemkin Party's aggressive agenda of "sovereign access to the sea"...etc. have rendered it a liability to Eritrea and other Member States affected by its pathetic/harmful track-record. In the event, Eritrea's withdrawal from IGAD cannot derail or diminish its vibrant agendas of regional cooperation as its continued memberships in COMESA (which brings together 22 countries from southern, eastern and central Africa) as well as the Council of Arab and African Coastal States of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden attests too.
3. Disparaging Eritrea's economic development agenda and governance structure. Here again, the Potemkin Party/Conflict Entrepreneurs' fallacious and distorted analyses are too hollow to merit serious response. Eritrea's overall performance in the face of relentless hostilities including intermittent wars of aggression, sanctions and other subterfuges, is a testament to the unparalleled resilience of its people and the prudence of GOE's policies. And the myopic mindset of the PP aside, the countries and peoples of the Horn of Africa region ought to cherish the economic progress and well-being of all the constituent parts as they share a common destiny shaped by immutable geography. In any case, with the staggering statistics of 68.7% of the population classified as multidimensionally poor in spite of massive international assistance and IMF bailouts; and, spiraling internal conflicts that stem from, and are triggered by, a governance structure of institutionalized ethnic polarization; Potemkin Party zealots, hired lobbyists, and external apologists are not in a position to disparage Eritrea's economic and governance architecture.

Profile Q & A - From the Red Sea to the Farm: How #Eritrea is Transforming Seaweed into Liquid Gold; by Sabrina Solomon
*"...At the forefront of this movement is Abdur Enterprise, a facility based in the port city of Massawa in the Northern Red Sea region. The enterprise is dedicated to the sustainable utilization of marine resources, with a core mission to enhance local livelihoods through ecological innovation".
*...Abdur is a village in the Gelalo sub-zone where people were already exploiting coastal resources 125,000 years ago. Published research identifies them as among the first to do so, which is why we chose the name for our enterprise. In addition to fish amino acid fertilizer and seaweed liquid fertilizer, we produce seaweed soap and bleach made from sea salt. We now have three branches: Abdur 1 focuses on organic fertilizer production, Abdur 2 on seaweed soap production, and Abdur 3 on seaweed and sea cucumber farming. We also have a website, https://t.co/V1Xd3AScIf, to help us connect with customers and gather feedback".
Good Read - #Eritrea: Harnessing Diversity for Unity and Development; by Bana Negusse
"Eritrea’s steadfast commitment to social justice and equality has played a central role in promoting inclusion across all segments of society. Beyond enriching the nation socially and economically, this commitment has been instrumental in strengthening national peace, stability, cohesion, and harmony. By consciously managing diversity through equitable policies, inclusive institutions, and shared values, Eritrea underscores a fundamental truth: unity is not the absence of difference, but the collective determination to ensure that difference becomes a source of strength rather than division".
