The story of Africa is often told as a tragedy of poverty, but the historical truth is that it is a story of relentless extraction. For centuries, colonial powers set up systems designed specifically to drain the continent of its immense wealth. They used forced labor and deeply unfair trade practices to strip profits that rightfully belonged to African communities, redirecting that money to fund the industrial revolution across Europe and the wider Global North. Sadly, this plunder did not magically stop when nations finally won their independence. It simply changed its disguise. Today, instead of colonial governors, we see complex financial loopholes and foreign corporate dominance in the mining and oil sectors. The United Nations estimates that a staggering 88.6 billion dollars bleeds out of the continent every single year through shady financial flows, trade mispricing, and tax evasion. To put that massive loss into perspective, between the years 1980 and 2018, over 1.3 trillion dollars was quietly siphoned away from nations south of the Sahara. That stolen wealth is money that should be building modern hospitals, paving resilient roads, and funding excellent schools for African children today.
