(8/11) Some former OpenAI researchers argue that the company has forfeited its original safety mission and accelerated an industry-wide race to the bottom.

The piece details a set of public and internal safety commitments that former researchers say were abandoned. Several safety-related teams at the company have been dissolved. The Future of Life Institute recently gave OpenAI an F on existential safety—alongside every other company, except for Anthropic, which got a D, and Google DeepMind, which got a D-.

Altman told us he still prioritizes safety, and that "we still will run safety projects, or at least safety-adjacent projects.”

For International Data Center Day, our head of mission critical Joel Nickel shared his outlook on the sector. Here’s what’s ahead:

· The biggest opportunity for data center development is the infrastructure buildout driven by AI, projected to require up to $3 trillion in investment by 2030. While AI training is currently driving the demand, a major shift is expected from 2027-2028 as AI inference becomes the dominant workload.

· For maximum speed-to-market, data center clients are moving away from traditional “hand-off” workflows toward fully integrated teams that eliminate the month-long gaps in coordination between design, procurement, and construction. This can include Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), modular and prefabrication, advanced liquid cooling teams, and virtual commission (CX) teams.

· Key to strategic data center planning are scalability and long-term resilience—that’s accomplished with a strategic construction partner that manages complexities and integration early to build a foundation for the client’s technological roadmap.

The data center landscape is evolving fast—and the opportunities are massive.

Over several years, a remarkable transformation has taken shape at Amherst College’s new Student Center and Dining Commons—a project redefining what adaptive reuse and mass timber construction can achieve.

The new center rises from the repurposed foundation of the former Merrill Science Building. Rather than demolish and rebuild, the project team carefully removed the shell and core, preserving the existing concrete structure to form the ground and first floors of the new 144,000-square-foot, four-level facility.

From there, the team built upward in mass timber, partnering with Nordic Structures to advance floor by floor in a carefully coordinated and precise sequence aligned with all other scopes of work.

The impact is measurable:

• 900 tons of CO₂ reduced by utilizing a mass timber structure in place of traditional steel
• 30% reduction in embodied carbon through reuse of the existing concrete base
• Approximately 440 tons of CO₂ avoided by preserving Merrill’s original foundations
