In that context, I visited Kalaburagi, and there was an incident also on the 14th of July about the escape of three prisoners. I thought I should have personal information and assessment on how and why it has happened and how to improve the situation. So for that purpose, I visited the Kalaburagi prison, and also I reviewed the situation of what next has to be done with regard to the security, then the correctional aspect, then the productions and other things, how to make the administration cleaner. So all these aspects have been discussed there. Thereafter, I discussed with Commissioner Kalaburagi city and other officers, senior officers, and then whatever improvement can be brought with regard to the prison, that we have discussed..." #WATCH | Kalaburagi, Karnataka | On his visit to Central Jail, Kalaburagi, Karnataka Prisons and Correctional Services DGP Alok Kumar says, “This was the second visit of mine after taking charge as Director General, Prison and Correctional Services. There was an incident on 14 July in which three prisoners escaped from here. Kalburgi police and Bidar police have jointly apprehended two criminals, and the third one is yet to be apprehended… Then I reviewed the security situation and gave directions to our prison staff and KSISF also to add certain security features and make changes in our security arrangements… I have given direction with regard to the implementation of correctional services in the prisons… Instead of being very retributive, we have to focus on the rehabilitation, reintegration, and reformation of the prisoners… We have introduced yoga, meditation, and pranayama in all the prisons in Karnataka. We want to bring internal changes in the mindset of the people because unless they are reformed from within, they may again get into such old practices of committing crime once they come out of prison… In the coming days, we will give more emphasis to this in Karnataka prisons… We are introducing certain practices in Karnataka prisons so that our prisons become a better place for prisoners and our prison officers…”

Over 4,000 Inmates Participate in Mass Yoga Session at Bengaluru Central Prison

On the occasion of the 12th International Day of #Yoga, more than 4,000 inmates participated in a massive group yoga session today at the Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara, #Bengaluru.

Organized under this year's theme, "Yoga for Healthy Aging," the program featured inmates and staff enthusiastically practicing various yoga asanas and pranayama to raise awareness about holistic well-being.

​ The event was attended by Alok Kumar, IPS, Director General of Police, Prisons and Correctional Services,, who addressed the participants on the profound significance of the practice. He emphasized that alongside maintaining physical health, yoga plays a crucial role in cultivating mental fortitude, self-confidence, and a highly disciplined lifestyle.

​The large-scale event saw participation from across the prison facility, bringing together over 4,000 individuals from the women's section, convicts' section, Annex-1 building, high-security section and the under-trial prisoners' section.

​The initiative received notable community support, with UCO Bank donating 1,500 yoga mats for the general prison population, and the PMI supplying an additional 120 mats specifically for female inmates. Members from the Art of Living foundation were also present to participate in the day's activities.

8 Year Old Prison Fraud Surfaces in Karnataka; DG Prisons Orders Inquiry After Complaint, Convict Found Freed Using Fake Supreme Court Order, FIR Registered

A sensational case of fraudulent release from prison has come to light at #ParappanaAgrahara Central Jail #Bengaluru, prompting police action against a convict and his alleged accomplices.

According to the First Information Report filed on May 20, 2026, by Karna B. Kshatri, Superintendent In-Charge of the Central #Prison, convict Shankar A was illegally released in November 2018 using forged Supreme Court documents. Shankar, son of Arumugam, had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Fast Track Court‑1, Bengaluru City, under Sections 364A and 120B of the IPC, with both sentences ordered to run concurrently.

The FIR states that on November 13, 2018, prison officials received an order purportedly issued by the Supreme Court, claiming to be dated November 2, 2018, in a Criminal Appeal. Based on this forged document, Shankar paid fine of ₹10,000 and was released.

Nearly eight years later, complaints reached Alok Kumar, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, alleging that Shankar’s release was unlawful. Alok Kumar immediately ordered an inquiry, and the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Southern Range, Bengaluru, sought verification from the Supreme Court. The Assistant Registrar of the apex court confirmed that the order was fake and directed that appropriate legal action be taken.

The FIR has been registered against Shankar and others under Sections 465, 466, 468, 471, 472 and 420 of the IPC. A special team has been formed to arrest Shankar and those who assisted him in creating the forged Supreme Court orders.
