NDPC Commissions New Headquarters
The Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr ‘Bosun Tijani, today commissioned the new headquarters of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), hosted by the National Commissioner/CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, marking a significant milestone in the growth of data protection in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Dr Tijani commended Dr Olatunji’s leadership and the contributions of the Commission to Nigeria’s digital transformation. He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for the data protection ecosystem, including the signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, the directive for MDAs to comply with data protection regulations, and the allocation of a property to the NDPC for use as its new headquarters.
He further commended the staff of the Commission under the leadership of the National Commissioner for the progress made in advancing data protection in Nigeria and urged them to do more to ensure that data protection and privacy become priorities for all Nigerians.
In his remarks, themed “Upward Trajectory of NDPC,” Dr Olatunji expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Honourable Minister for their continued support to the Commission.
He reflected on the Commission’s growth from a 12-member unit within NITDA to a leading Data Protection Authority, highlighting key milestones, including 356 licensed data protection-compliant organisations, over 27,000 jobs created, more than 66,000 Nigerians reached through the Virtual Privacy Academy, and 228 training programmes benefiting over 99,000 individuals. He described the new facility as the largest Data Protection Authority office in Africa.

The ceremony was attended by stakeholders from the data protection and digital economy ecosystems, who joined the Commission to mark this significant milestone in Nigeria’s data protection journey.

At the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), we marked a significant milestone in our journey as the new headquarters of the Commission was officially commissioned by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr ‘Bosun Tijani.

It was a deeply fulfilling moment to welcome the Honourable Minister, alongside stakeholders and partners across Nigeria’s data protection and digital economy ecosystem, to this new chapter in the Commission’s journey.

In his remarks, the Honourable Minister commended the leadership of the Commission and the progress we have made in advancing data protection as a critical component of Nigeria’s digital transformation. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, including the signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act), the directive for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with data protection regulations, and the allocation of this property to the Commission as its new headquarters.

For me, the occasion was also an opportunity to reflect on the upward trajectory of the NDPC. We have come a long way: from a 12-member unit within the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to a full-fledged Data Protection Authority playing an increasingly important role in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Today, the numbers tell part of the story: we have licensed 356 Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs), created over 27,000 jobs with the data protection ecosystem, reached more than 66,000 Nigerians through the Virtual Privacy Academy, and delivered about 228 training programmes benefiting over 99,000 individuals, among others.

And now, we have what is described as the largest Data Protection Authority office in Africa. But beyond the numbers, this building represents something much bigger: the growing recognition that trust, privacy and responsible data use are fundamental to Nigeria’s digital future.

I remain deeply grateful to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to the Honourable Minister, Dr ‘Bosun Tijani, for their continued support and confidence in the Commission. I also want to commend the incredible staff of the NDPC whose dedication, professionalism and commitment continue to drive our progress.

As we celebrate this milestone, our responsibility becomes even greater. The new headquarters is not the destination: it is a platform for greater impact. We must continue to build a data protection ecosystem that protects the rights of Nigerians, enables responsible innovation, strengthens trust and positions Nigeria as a leader in Africa and the global digital economy.

The trajectory is upward!
