Detecting Counterfeit Goods
Counterfeit goods rarely appear only at the point of sale.
They can infiltrate the supply chain through unauthorized distributors, diversion, and tampered packaging, which happen often long before products ever reach consumers.
Smartphone-based authentication can verify products in real time throughout the supply chain, changing how companies detect and respond to counterfeit activity at scale.

What is the gray market?
The gray market is not counterfeiting, it is a very different problem.
The gray market, for example, is when you have a perfume that is sold at a lower cost in Asia, and the distributors in Asia are going to resell it in Germany because of the price difference. The reseller is going to make much more profit, but he does not have the right to sell this product in Germany. This hurts the other reseller of the brand.
In the next video entitled, ‘What are the solutions for fighting against the gray market?’, I will discuss this phenomenon which is called gray market, or parallel trading.

5 Types of Brand Abuse
• Counterfeiting
• Grey market diversion
• Fake websites
• Social media impersonation
• Intellectual property theft
Modern brand protection extends far beyond fake products alone.
As digital and physical threats continue to evolve, brands increasingly require a combination of authentication, monitoring, enforcement, and supply chain visibility.

White Paper: The Connected Product
Digitization is reshaping how products are manufactured, distributed, and verified. Serialization, connected systems, and analytics are now standard components of modern supply chains, yet visibility alone does not guarantee authenticity.
In our latest white paper, we explore how traceability and physical authentication must function as complementary layers within digital ecosystems.
Inside, we examine:
• Why serialization alone cannot fully prevent misuse or counterfeiting.
• Where digitization introduces new security gaps
• How physical and digital verification intersect.
• Common threat patterns across supply chains
• Practical challenges in implementing integrated protection systems.
For brand owners navigating compliance, digital transformation, and product integrity, this paper provides a structured framework to assess where authentication adds measurable value.

Can we use AI to distinguish between genuine and fake?
If a human can tell the difference, then yes, AI can be used to distinguish between genuine and fake products.
In practice, it is not so simple because neural networks need to be trained. To do this, it is necessary to obtain a high number of counterfeits and genuine products to cover the whole variability. This can be difficult.
This means that using AI to perform verification is not obvious. However, this does not prevent from using AI for specific operations of the verification process.

PROTECT WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS PUT ON THEIR SKIN
Counterfeit perfume is a consumer health risk.
Fake fragrances have been found to contain chemicals linked to:
• Skin irritation
• Respiratory issues
• Long-term health concerns
And they’re everywhere. Over 500,000 counterfeit fragrance items seized in a single year.
The challenge? Most authentication methods are visible and easy to replicate.
So how do you actually protect your product, and your customers?
We break it down in our latest article, including how authentication can be built directly into packaging:

Is it useful to implement a security feature?
It depends. If a security feature is implemented, but not used to prevent or fight against counterfeiting, then it is useless.
It is important to use a security feature to take action against counterfeiting. For instance, brands can have inspectors go into shops and hire people to do test purchases. If the feature is available for consumers, communicate that so that it is widely used.
As a conclusion, if something is done about it, then it is useful to implement an anti-counterfeit feature.
For example, AlpVision provides Brand Monitoring System; a central server that allows you to see detection statistics that assist you in taking appropriate actions.

Detecting Counterfeit Goods in the Supply Chain
Detecting counterfeit goods starts inside the supply chain, not at the point of sale. Counterfeit and pirated products account for an estimated $500 billion in global trade, infiltrating industries from luxury fashion to pharmaceuticals and even critical industrial components. The question is: where and how should brands verify product authenticity before the damage of counterfeits occurs?

The Hidden Cost Of Luxury
Counterfeiting in fashion means lost trust, lost revenue, and loss of control.
And it’s not just counterfeits.
The gray market is quietly eroding pricing, distribution, and brand equity.
Most brands rely on:
-QR codes
-RFID
-Visible features
But these are often replicable, removable, or disconnected from the physical product.
What if authentication was built directly into the product itself?
That’s what we explore in our white paper for the fashion industry.

Is the security of the anti-counterfeit feature the most important point?
When selecting a security feature, should you focus on the security as the most important point? Surprisingly, no. That is, if you choose a covert security feature, as they are very difficult to replicate. At AlpVision, we haven’t seen any counterfeits of our features in more than 20 years.
Instead, you should first focus on the complexity of the implementation. Would it change your production process? What are the costs associated with those changes? AlpVision solutions are designed to integrate smoothly into your processes so that you can avoid any changes to your production.
Second, you should consider the usage of the security feature. Indeed, the goal of implementing an anti-counterfeit feature is to reduce the number of counterfeits. How would you use the selected feature to reach this goal? For example, AlpVision provides Brand Monitoring System; a central server that allows you to see detection statistics that assist you in taking appropriate actions.

What is Brand Protection? A definition
Brand protection is the set of measures and safeguards put in place to minimize damage from brand abuse. It includes strategies, technologies, and legal actions companies use to prevent counterfeit products, trademark infringement, online impersonation, and brand abuse. Brand protection combines intellectual property enforcement, digital monitoring, supply chain security, and authentication technologies to safeguard revenue and reputation.

What is the size of the anti-counterfeiting market?
It is often presented as 100 biliion dollar market. Why is that? It is the theoretical loss every year, if we multiply the number of counterfeited products by the price at which they should have been sold. However, that is not the real market size.
The real size of the anti-counterfeiting market is how much brands are willing to pay to fight counterfeits multiplied by the number of brands. This is more a 100 million dollar market.
Why is that? Brand owners want the most secure solution at the lowest unit price. Alpvision security features are particularly useful for large volumes, as their price is essentially based on the right to operate or a yearly royalty.

Counterfeit Perfume: Health Risks and Brand Protection
Counterfeit perfumes are the fourth most seized item by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), according to the latest Intellectual Property Rights Seizure Statistics Report. CBP officials seized more than 500,000 fake fragrance items, amounting to over $57 million (USD) in retail value. The number proves how fakes are flooding the market, risking the reputation of the entire fragrance industry.
