Fed Hikes Rates First Time Since 2023, US Stocks Still Rally
Weekly Market Recap for September 14 to 20, 2026 from https://t.co/hwtKeavuLY
Three major central banks hiked rates together this week, yet our scan engine read Net Scores of plus 54.5 for FX/gold, plus 21.2 for US stocks, plus 20 for global indices, plus 15.1 for crypto, and minus 3.9 for Hong Kong.
Highlights
1) The Fed raised rates 0.25 percent to 3.75-4.00 percent on September 16, its first hike since 2023, driven by Strait of Hormuz oil risk, alongside the BOJ and HKMA hiking in the same week, following the ECB's own hike the week before
2) FX and gold scored net plus 54.5, the strongest category, on safe-haven buying, with gold rising even as the dollar strengthened on net
3) Hong Kong scored net minus 3.9, the only negative category, on Chinese tech selling combined with the HKMA hike weighing on real estate. CATL's A-shares fell 10 percent in two days
4) Crypto scored net plus 15.1, but 66 percent of tokens remain in a daily-bounce-within-weekly-downtrend pattern. Bitcoin swung between 75,350 and 81,354 dollars as ETF flows hit their quietest week in 141 weeks
5) AMD dropped then rebounded within the same week on an Anthropic-linked article followed by Nebius news, ending the week back in an uptrend
Next week: the Trump-Xi summit on September 24 and the US PCE reading on September 30

13 DRs Launched the Same Day — 1 of Them Isn't a Stock
Thirteen new depositary receipts hit the Thai exchange on the same day in June 2026, covering AI chips, space, digital assets, and US bonds.
Nine are single-stock, 1:1 receipts — like the one tracking Astera Labs — where risk rides entirely on that one company.
But one, BONDUS01, isn't a stock at all — it tracks a floating-rate US Treasury ETF. Completely different risk: sovereign credit, not company performance.
Same exchange, same release day, opposite risk profiles. Always check what a DR actually references before buying it.
Do you know which of your DRs track a stock versus a fund? Tell us below.

The "US Consumer" ETF That's Really Just Amazon and Tesla
XLY is labeled a Consumer Discretionary fund, but open the top 10 and 42.74% of it is just Amazon (24.70%) and Tesla (18.04%) as of September 17, 2026. Tesla sits in this sector under GICS rules, not because of car sales — its stock trades on AI and robotics headlines. Meanwhile US household credit stress is climbing (credit card 90+ day delinquency at 6.97%), even as the National Retail Federation forecasts 4.4% retail growth this year. That gap is the K-shaped economy in one fund. Check what's actually inside any ETF before assuming the name tells the whole story.

Approved 19 Days Early — Stock Still Down 40%
Why is a company that just got a world-first drug approved early still down 40% this year? Ionis Pharmaceuticals had its best and worst news land in the same quarter. ZANVASTRO, its treatment for Alexander disease, a condition with zero prior treatments, was approved by the FDA nineteen days ahead of schedule. But in that same quarter, two cardiovascular drugs developed with AstraZeneca and Novartis both failed their Phase 3 trials, wiping out the stock's biggest growth story and sending shares down more than 40% year-to-date. The next catalyst to watch is bepirovirsen, a hepatitis B drug awaiting an FDA decision on October 26. Does a platform that has produced five approved drugs outweigh two failed trials in one quarter?

AI Got 1,000x Cheaper. Your AI Bill Still Tripled.
Inference costs fell roughly 1,000x since 2021 (a16z data) — yet US enterprise AI spend jumped 3.2x in one year, from $11.5bn to $37bn (Menlo Ventures). This is the Jevons Paradox: the same pattern that made Britain burn more coal after steam engines got more efficient, and the same reason LED lighting didn't cut total electricity use. Cheaper AI unlocks agent workflows that burn 5-30x more tokens per task than a single chat message. The fix: budget by cost-per-outcome, not cost-per-token. Is your company's AI budget ready for that shift?

60 New DRs, 3 Days — Thailand's Listing Sprint
Thailand's exchange added nearly 60 new depositary receipts in July alone, in two 30-DR batches just three days apart. That's not 60 new investable companies — it's six brokerages repackaging the same semiconductor and AI-infrastructure names as competing DRs. Year-to-date issuance hit 260 securities by early August, averaging +9% returns, topping out at +168%. DRs tracking Alibaba dropped nearly 20% while DRs tracking Lenovo gained over 70% — capital is rotating out of China tech into Western semiconductor names. Before buying the next new DR, check if you already own the same underlying stock through another broker.

The "Emerging Markets" Fund That Owns Zero Percent Vietnam
On September 21, Vietnam joins FTSE's Secondary Emerging Market tier, forcing FTSE funds like VWO to buy Vietnamese stocks now. Hold EEM (iShares MSCI Emerging Markets) instead, and your Vietnam weight stays zero, MSCI still calls it Frontier.
Bigger lesson: index providers disagree on what "emerging" means. South Korea is the extreme case. MSCI still calls it Emerging (20.8% of EEM, led by Samsung and SK Hynix); FTSE promoted it to Developed in 2009, so VWO holds zero Korea. That gap is why EEM is up roughly 23.0% this year versus VWO's 10.2-10.5%, EEM caught the AI memory rally VWO missed.
The cost: EEM charges 0.72% a year, 12x VWO's 0.06% and 8x IEMG's 0.09%, BlackRock's own cheaper twin on the same index. Long-term holders have little reason left to pay EEM's premium.

D50I0A m#Nieltlwioornk dinolglars a year — that is what one company now earns from Japan alone, with a stated goal to double it by 2027. That company is not Japanese. It is FPT Corporation, Vietnam's largest technology company, and Japan is just one of the markets paying it to write software. FPT has also committed 200 million dollars with NVIDIA to build AI infrastructure, and has started shipping its own designed semicond. Profit grew 14 percent in the first half of 2026, and the stock trades near its 52-week low despite a Buy-heavy analyst consensus. Had you heard of FPT before today?

Why NVIDIA Opened Its Crown Jewel Interconnect to Silicon Rivals
For ten years, NVLink was the most guarded proprietary standard in enterprise computing.
If a hyperscaler wanted high-speed chip-to-chip communication, they had to buy pure NVIDIA hardware.
At the AI Infra Summit in Santa Clara, that closed-door policy officially changed with the launch of NVLink Fusion. NVIDIA is now allowing external silicon partners, including d-Matrix and Amazon Annapurna Labs, to plug their own custom accelerators directly into NVIDIA Vera CPUs.
The rationale behind this move is defensive strategy. A massive industry alliance called the Ultra Ethernet Consortium—led by Broadcom, Arista, Cisco, and Meta—is preparing to deploy 1.6 Terabit-per-second open Ethernet fabrics to break InfiniBand's 60% gross margin stranglehold.
By opening NVLink just enough to incorporate third-party inference chips, NVIDIA ensures that its own CPUs and switches remain the irreplaceable foundation of the server rack.
The real battle for AI supremacy is no longer about the processor on the board, but the fabric that ties the rack together.
Do you believe open Ethernet standards will eventually displace proprietary fabrics in hyperscale clusters? Drop your thoughts below.
