EIP-8363 dropped yesterday and the Ethereum community is already fighting about it.

The proposal: at every epoch, a slice of every validator's rewards gets burned instead of paid out. The slice grows as more ETH stakes. Hit ~50% staked and 100% of new issuance goes to the 🔥. Net yield trends to zero at that point.

Why they're pushing it: the staking ratio crossed 1/3 of supply in April and the entry queue has been at max churn ever since, adding roughly 1.75M ETH a month. At today's curve, yield never drops below ~1.5%, even if literally every ETH is staked. Proponents think that's a problem waiting past majority.

Mechanically it's small. One new constant (saturation at ~half supply). A per-validator burn, not a redirect, so it stays credibly neutral like EIP-1559. Micro-incentives are untouched (attesting still pays the same). 18-month phase-in plus ~6 months fork lead time, so about 2 years to adjust.

The author list is pintail, Jérôme de Tychey, dapplion, pa7x1, Ladislaus von Daniels, and Justin Drake. Drake's name matters: he's about as establishment as Ethereum research gets, so this isn't some random LST founder's pet project.

The objection that actually has teeth isn't the loudest one. It's the solo staker argument. The EIP cuts yield uniformly for everyone, but institutions have lower costs, better access to MEV, and usually better tax structuring. If you compress yields across the board, the higher-cost operators get pushed out first, which is the opposite of what the EIP claims to want. Three academic studies (Arnold et al., Eloranta & Helminen, Zhu/Korinek/Duckworth) basically model that outcome. The authors concede it's the strongest open question and argue equilibrium yield stays positive, but it's not settled.

There's also a process gripe: the PR landed 48 hours before the Hegotá PFI deadline, and Strawmap had scheduled issuance updates for I*, not Hegotá. Other researchers feel rushed on a monetary policy change.

My honest take: I don't know if this is the right answer, but it's the most serious monetary-policy debate Ethereum has had since The Merge, and the answer to "should we taper issuance" is probably not "never." Either this gets tweaked into something better or it dies and the next attempt benefits from the work. 🧵
