Launching of the Nigerian-Balkan and African Automotive conference to drive Economic investment and Growth

NADDC Director General, Joseph Osanipin at the launching of Nigerian-Balkan hub and African Automotive Conference, hosted by the Lagos chamber industry of commerce (LCCI) in collaboration with ministry of industry, trade and investment (FMITI) at the Eko Hotel and suites Victoria island, Lagos state. Theme: “Connecting Nations, empowering visions: invest in Nigeria-Balkan businesses”. The conference aimed at encouraging countries and states investors to opportunities in Nigeria for international Trade and to foster economic growth.

NADDC Director General, Joseph Osanipin outlined the investment opportunities in the sector, he encouraged investors to take advantage of the investment in the industry and lastly, he discussed the ecstatic idea of the council to set up industrial parks for automotive parts manufacturers in Anambra and Ogun state respectively in order to foster investment and production of more automotive parts.

The Permanent Secretary of FMITI Amb. Nura Rimi, ably represented by Mrs Orji Jethro stressed the critical role play by automotive sectors in Economic development, job creation and Technological innovation.

LOCAL AUTO COMPONENTS PARTS INTEGRATION : NADDC & AAAM SWING INTO ACTION.

Inline with the developmental programs of the 2023-Nigeria Automotive Industry Development Plan geared towards enhancing automotive components Integration in the industry, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM) on Monday 19th August 2024 embarked on strategic familiarization tour of all the auto parts manufacturers in Nigeria.

The facilities visited on the first day of the tour in Lagos State includes, Mikano Break Pads, Vita Parts Nigeria, Chanrai Nigeria Limited, Vita Visco Nigeria Ltd.

Speaking during the tour, the Director General, NADDC, Mr. Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin stated that the aim of the visit was to focus on component parts manufacturers, as without them, a vehicle cannot move.
He mentioned that discussions were earlier held with components parts manufacturers and auto assemblers.

"The first leg of the visit, whose aim was to assess the capacity of assembly plants is complete. The second phase focuses on enhancing the capabilities of components parts manufacturers" he added.
Accompanied by technical partners, Osanipin emphasized the vast aftermarket that abound in Nigeria for auto parts.

Dave Coffey, the Chief Executive Officer of AAAM praised Mikano International Limited's machinery quality, highlighting its potential for high product capacity. He emphasized the need for policy support to maximize production.
Coffey identified an opportunity to localize production, reducing imports, particularly for aftermarket components.

Joseph Musa, Managing Director of VitaVisco Nigeria Limited, discussed the company's struggles and aspirations. Established to supply automotive foam, VitaVisco faces low patronage, forcing them to explore alternative uses for their equipment.

Musa emphasized the need for government support and collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) to revitalize the automotive foam sector. He highlighted the importance of working with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to service the industry.

The Business Manager of Vita Parts Nigeria Limited stated that the company is an indigenous manufacturer of oil filters, producing various ranges for Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Kia, and Hyundai. Currently, raw materials are sourced from China due to local unavailability, but efforts are being made to source locally.

Through this direct engagement, the NADDC and AAAM aim to promote Industry growth and development, fostering a more intergrated and cooperative Automotive Sector in Nigeria.

OUR INTENTION IS TO MOVE FROM SKD TO CKD; OSANIPIN DECLARES.

In continuation of the familiarization visit to the local auto assembly plants, the Director General NADDC, Mr Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin visited NORD Motors, Proforce, Mikano Motors , CIG and Simba Group on Tuesday 9th July, 2023.

In a statement during the tour, the Director General reiterated the Council's commitment to move the Nigeria auto industry from Semi- Knocked Down (SKD) to Completely- Knocked Down (CKD)production capacity in the nearest future.

"At NADDC, our ambition is to increase the local components of every vehicle that is coming out from the assembly plants. Basically our intention is to move from SKD to CKD in the next three to four years".

Osanipin said that the facilities have enough capacity in terms of installed capacity and level of operation even beyond the perception of the public.

"The essence of this tour is to establish where we are, what is our reality, where are we in moving from SKD to CKD?. And from what we have seen, we have seen what we need to do, those we need to talk to, and the kind of synergy we need to have with other stakeholders to move ahead" he added.

To achieve CKD production capacity in the auto industry, the DG said " We need to do backward integration and meet the components manufacturers and start bringing them up, because it is a complete ecosystem and no one can do it alone".

He however applauded the readiness of the assembly plants to embrace CNG- production as some of the auto makers were already producing either direct CNG- Powered vehicles or converting to CNG.

Responding, the Managing Directors/ CEO's expressed their profound gratitude for the efforts of the NADDC Chief in propelling the local automotive industry, adding that with proper regulations and consistent enabling environment, the auto manufacturers could achieve CKD in no distant time.
