Accurate information matters, especially when adults make informed choices about nicotine products. A recent paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association that detailed why and how physicians might recommend e-cigarettes to adult smokers looking to quit was covered by the Washington Post.
In his latest article, Altria Fellow @MohamadiSarkar addresses some of the hesitancy some physicians may still have about these recommendations, exploring the science around tobacco harm reduction. With nicotine pouches also in mind, Mohamadi reiterates the importance of helping adult nicotine consumers understand differences in risk across products.

A review process that’s predictable, transparent, and timely benefits everyone. At #FDLI2026, Paige Magness discussed how a standards-based PMTA pathway could help @FDA Tobacco authorize products more efficiently while maintaining important public health safeguards.
Could product category-based review frameworks increase @FDATobacco regulatory predictability while meeting the public health standard? Tune in tomorrow at 2:45 ET as SVP, Regulatory Affairs Paige Magness joins a #FDLI panel of experts to explore the possibilities. https://t.co/ps13F5AnZu
Today at #TSRC2026, Thad Hannel will present research using an agent-based model to explore the potential population health impact of nicotine pouches.
Under the modeled assumptions, nicotine pouch availability was associated with approximately 738,000 fewer tobacco-attributable deaths, 14.7 million life-years gained and an additional 1.18 percentage-point reduction in adult smoking prevalence through 2100. The projected outcomes were driven largely by adults who smoke switching completely to nicotine pouches.
The researchers tested multiple assumptions related to product risk, adult switching and potential youth initiation. While the model continued to project a net population benefit across those analyses, one principle remains clear: youth should not use any tobacco or nicotine product.
Models do not predict the future. They help researchers test uncertainty and evaluate the potential risks and benefits of smoke-free products.

In our latest PATH Study analysis, adults using fruit-flavored ENDS were more likely to leave cigarettes behind entirely.
Our recent ALCS analysis of PATH Study Waves 6-7 (2021-2023) adds to the growing evidence on the role of flavors among adults transitioning away from combustible cigarettes.
Among adult dual users of cigarettes and ENDS, those using fruit-flavored ENDS were more likely to switch completely from smoking to exclusive ENDS use than those using tobacco-flavored products (22.8% vs. 14.7%). Tobacco-flavor users were also more likely to discontinue ENDS use and continue smoking cigarettes. We also found that adults who switched completely to ENDS reported fruit flavor most often, and tobacco flavor far less.
These findings point to non-tobacco flavors, particularly fruit, as a common feature of ENDS use among adults who successfully move away from combustible cigarettes.
When it comes to tobacco harm reduction, context matters. Different populations, cultures, regulatory environments, and public health priorities can shape both the challenges and potential solutions.
At GTNF 2026, Altria's Mohamadi Sarkar, Fellow, Scientific Strategy, Regulatory Affairs, will moderate "New Approaches to Harm Reduction," a conversation exploring strategies to accelerate the progress toward tobacco harm reduction..
Drawing on experiences from around the world, panelists will explore what is driving progress, what lessons may be applicable across markets, and which emerging approaches deserve greater attention. Join the conversation as global experts discuss how diverse perspectives and evidence-informed strategies can help advance tobacco harm reduction and reduce smoking-related disease.
When people hear that smoking rates have declined, it's easy to assume the challenge has largely been solved. But millions of adults continue to smoke, and many face barriers that make switching away from cigarettes more difficult than often recognized.
At GTNF 2026, Altria's Joe Williams will moderate "The Forgotten Smoker," a discussion focused on understanding those barriers and exploring how science, policy, and consumer insights can help drive further progress.
The panel will examine the role of risk misperceptions, regulatory and policy frameworks, and access to smoke-free alternatives, while exploring how evidence-based approaches can help reduce smoking-related disease and ensure the needs of adults who smoke are not overlooked.
Advancing public health requires more than generating evidence—it requires actively engaging in the scientific and policy conversations that shape understanding, regulation and decision-making.
This past spring, Altria scientists and subject-matter experts participated in a range of scientific, public health, and policy forums, sharing research, exchanging perspectives, and contributing to important discussions on tobacco regulation, population health, toxicology, consumer behavior, and harm reduction.
While conferences may last only a few days, the work of harm reduction happens every day. These engagements are an important opportunity to share evidence, challenge assumptions, and advance the scientific dialogue that helps inform public health and regulatory decision-making.

Tobacco harm reduction is entering a new phase, one focused not on possibility, but on impact.
At GTNF 2026, Maria Gogova, Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Altria Client Services, will deliver a keynote titled "The Next Phase of Tobacco Harm Reduction: From Possibility to Impact.“
Drawing on the latest science and real-world evidence, Maria will explore how expanding access to regulated smoke-free alternatives, ensuring science-based information guides decision-making, and leveraging insights from real-world data can help accelerate progress in reducing smoking-related death and disease.
The next chapter of tobacco harm reduction will be defined not by what is possible, but by our ability to deliver measurable impact for adults who smoke and public health.
The future of tobacco harm reduction, regulation and nicotine innovation will be front and center at the Global Tobacco & Nicotine Forum (GTNF) 2026, and Altria is excited to be part of the conversation.
From September 9-11 in Lisbon, GTNF will bring together leading voices from science, public health, government, academia and industry to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the future.
We look forward to engaging with stakeholders from around the world and contributing to important discussions about evidence, innovation and the role science can play in helping adults who smoke move away from cigarettes.
The latest results from the Adult Tobacco Consumer Tracker (ATCT) are now available.
Understanding where tobacco use is heading requires more than an annual snapshot. It requires timely data that can help researchers, regulators, and public health stakeholders track changes as they occur.
Altria Client Services' ATCT has been providing nationally representative insights into tobacco use prevalence and transition behavior since 2013. The survey tracks trends across major product categories, including cigarettes, cigars, oral tobacco products, and e-vapor products, helping provide a more current view of the tobacco landscape.

Helping adults who smoke move away from cigarettes remains one of the greatest opportunities to reduce tobacco-related disease.
A recent JAMA article adds to a growing body of evidence recognizing the role smoke-free alternatives can play in that effort. Yet for the millions of adults seeking better alternatives to smoking, scientific progress alone is not enough.
To fully realize the potential public health benefits of smoke-free products, adults need access to FDA-authorized alternatives through a well-functioning regulated marketplace. As evidence continues to evolve, so too should the regulatory pathways that allow science-backed innovation to reach the people who may benefit from it.

The FDA's authorization of four new on! nicotine pouch products demonstrates the progress that can be achieved through science, persistence and engagement with the regulatory process.
As the FDA noted, its “evaluation found that these new products contain lower levels of most harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) when compared to other oral and smokeless tobacco products, many of which were too low to be quantified in the new products.”
Congratulations and thanks to everyone whose hard work helped make this possible.
Today, the FDA authorized the marketing of 4 new nicotine pouches made by Helix Innovations LLC, under the “on!” brand name: Rich Berry 2 mg, Cappuccino 2 mg, Cappuccino 4 mg, and Autumn Spice 2 mg. https://t.co/suN3fH6ja9
Many public health experts aim to minimize the risks of tobacco use, recognizing that not everyone can or will quit smoking. In fact, most of the 30 million U.S. adults who smoke want to stop — but only half try, and just 10% succeed.
That’s where smoke-free products come in. Our research shows that nearly half of the 30 million adults who smoke are interested in smoke-free products. Because no single product category can meet the needs of all adult smokers a regulated portfolio of smoke-free alternatives is vital to support successful switching and improve public health outcomes.
At Altria, we are focused on offering a portfolio of satisfying smoke-free products across four smoke-free categories: e-vapor, modern oral nicotine pouches, heated tobacco, and smokeless tobacco.
Choice drives harm reduction by empowering adults who smoke to find a smoke-free product that works for them to move beyond smoking.

Harm reduction doesn’t happen on paper—it happens through behavior. Actual Use Studies help us understand what actually changes.
Actual Use Studies (AUS) evaluate how consumers use a new tobacco product when given access in real-world or near-real-world settings. Rather than relying on intentions or controlled conditions, these studies allow adults who use tobacco products to use the product freely over time while tracking behaviors such as frequency of use, switching, dual use, and changes in consumption—providing a realistic view of how the product is likely to be used in practice.
In FDA applications (e.g., PMTA or MRTPA), AUS provides critical behavioral evidence to support a determination that a product is appropriate for the protection of public health. They help demonstrate whether adults who use tobacco products are likely to switch from higher-risk products or reduce use, while also identifying potential unintended behaviors. This real-world use data informs the population-level assessment of risks and benefits, supporting conclusions about whether a product is likely to deliver a net public health benefit.

Understanding how adults who smoke make decisions is an important part of improving public health outcomes.
Many adults who smoke are seeking satisfying smoke-free alternatives. Whether they switch often depends on access to products offered in a variety of flavors and strengths.
When those options are limited or unavailable in the regulated market, consumer demand does not disappear. It shifts outside the regulated system.
Recognizing how consumer demand, product access, and switching behavior are connected can help inform more effective approaches that support harm reduction for adults who smoke while maintaining a strong focus on underage use prevention.
