Illuminating educational inequality by helping young people in the state sector to find their alumni role models! UpRising Social Action Campaign 2020.
Tonight we co-hosted an event with @UpRising_UK about #MultiplyingChange, where we spoke to @Bobby_Seagull about his career and his passion for education & maths! It was really inspiring, so thanks to Bobby for his insights. ☺️
We completely agree with this, and it’s the ethos to what we want to achieve. Bring alumni in to state schools to highlight to students the range of career options out there!
A thing I often think is missing from the uni discourse is that young people who aren't from a pretty wealthy (/academic/high cultural capital) background actually have no idea what jobs there are except the quite obvious ones
What impact can interactions with alumni have on young people? Evidence demonstrates that interactions with past pupils can make a significant difference to motivation, confidence and resilience. They provide pupils with an insight into a future that could be theirs. #RoleModels
@Bobby_Seagull @UpRising_UK Thanks Bobby! 😁 We’d love to hear if you had any experiences with alumni (or not) whilst at school and whether this did/could have benefited you in your career?
Of the UpRising alumni we spoke to, 80% said their state schools did not have an alumni network. This is a clear example of the lack of connection between schools and their alumni, therefore creating a dearth of role models and career examples for young people.
With many people now having to teach children at home, we’d like to share a list of all the free resources that are available to make the task a little bit easier and keep young people motivated during this time #remotelearning#education

We have another testimony from our member Connor! “I currently work in fundraising. I never had the opportunity to interact with any alumni from my school in Manchester, with the only notable known alumni being from the worlds of sport and music. There were therefore no alumni..
It’s important for schools to keep in touch with their alumni, to help provide young people with inspiration, career ideas, and to show what‘s possible! We’d love to hear from you: did you have a school alumni who inspired you? Or would have benefited from one? #SocialAction2020
a combined authority mayor. It would have been great if my school had an alumni network that encouraged them to give us a talk about their career, as hearing from an MP who attended my school would have greatly inspired me into politics much earlier and given me career focus.”
We want to share a testimony from one of our members, Lauren, who studied Politics and now works in Local Government, about how school alumni could have helped her find a role model and progress in her career earlier: “One of my school’s alumni was an MP, who is now also..
