Hogan-Newton fundraiser nets
$9,000 for Bay City News interns
A successful fundraiser in memory of beloved writing coach Mary Ann Hogan brought in $9,000 to be donated to the Bay City News Foundation for its “turbocharged” internship program.
This is the fifth consecutive year the Hogan-Newton Fund at the Miami Foundation has supported nearly 50 Bay City interns with grants totaling $33,000.
The Bay City News Foundation distributes its stories on https://t.co/jNJ9HXZ9bN, through newsletters and social media, and through Bay City News Service, which for 45 years has provided around-the-clock news coverage to most of the San Francisco Bay Area’s news outlets.
Under owner Katherine Ann Rowlands, BCN improved its program for paid interns, teaching them to do professional-level work. "I benefited from mentors early in my career,” Rowlands said, “and it gives me immense joy to provide that opportunity for the next generation of journalists now.”
The $9,000 grant provides funds for mentoring as well as travel, research and other money to help interns do substantive journalistic projects that will set their portfolios apart.
The grant will help Bay City News interns “turbocharge their careers,” said Rowlands. “It will help our interns stand out and get that great first job.” Interns traditionally cover breaking news, such as fires, crime and public meetings. The new funding will help interns do deep dives into a news issue, such as voter engagement, housing, the census, poverty, the environment and more.
“In the right learning environment, young journalists can do almost any story,” said Eric Newton, founder of the Hogan-Newton Fund. "Mary Ann always believed that."
The fund was launched after the death of writer and writing teacher Mary Ann Hogan in 2019, and this year, on the fifth anniversary, the fund held an on-line fundraiser in social media, which raised $9,000 from dozens of donors.
“Thanks to all who donated,” Newton said. “The righteous cause of educating young journalists continues under her name.”
