@peachlybeloved Seeing solid proof that Eisenstein was familiar with Prince Serebryany, and it's so interesting that he adapted Fyodor's lament that the tsar no longer loved him to Ivan playing to Vladimir's sympathies and lulling him into a false sense of security.
@peachlybeloved Oh yes, this makes me want to reread that section. They devoted a good portion of the chapter on Eisenstein's Ivan on the Prayer of the Cup scene.
In her video essay for the Criterion edition of Ivan the Terrible, Joan Neuberger shows this concept art sketch of the deleted Oprichnik Oath scene for Part I. She talks about how the Oath scene is a dark version of Ivan’s coronation (and she's right)...+
And in true Eisenstein fashion, Fyodor with the chalice parallels both Anastasia at her wedding and her deathbed, which also foreshadows Fyodor’s death in the unfinished Part III.
but I think it's also set up as a mirror of his wedding with Fyodor drinking from the chalice. That might have been another reason it was deleted, by showing that Fyodor was already becoming Ivan’s ersatz Anastasia at the end of Part I...+
@lofrhaven It's always possible, but I'm not sure Valya would let them do that for him. He's already dealing with a lot of guilt. I could see both him and Sasha figuring something out to get Lakshmi home safely.
Valya has nothing left to loose now. He can go up to Venus on this extremely risky mission, or he can be arrested. Either way, the outcome's going to be the same, but at least the mission will allow him to go out on his own terms. #StarCity
I might be completely wrong about this (probably am), but I can't help but think three cosmonauts, the emphasis on oxygen, and the approximate date...is the Venera mission going to be FAM's version of Soyuz 11? #StarCity
And Tanya knows that Irina has very, very close connections to the inner circle. The question is will she stay and wait for Irina and still trust her, or will she remember Valya's instructions to contact the Americans if anything goes wrong? #StarCity
It's hard to tell because it's so dark, but that looks like a painting of a dead swan behind Tanya. Which, yeah, symbolism and also foreshadowing. #StarCity
Chief Designer calling Valya "my eagle." 🥹 Until explicitly confirmed otherwise, I still feel like Chief Designer knows something about Valya. #StarCity
