@zra_research Especially rough at the start when you don’t know any of the references or terms authors use as shorthand. And then there’s the performative seminar discussions where everyone shows off all the things they apparently know that you somehow don’t.

@zra_research Maybe this is a humanities thing, but...coursework, like, generally? ~1000 pages of reading a week with no instruction about how to handle that or build the skill of reading very rapidly (i.e. not thoroughly) for comprehension.

Apparently, with adequate ADHD meds and a little babysitting help from a friend, I can manage to fill out two mortgage applications, work out, shower, eat enough, and have a fraught convo with my dad all on a day when the 3-year-old has 4 fewer hours of daycare due to snow. 🌈🙏🏻

@wosewoes Just found my admissions letter, you're right. $13,544. I guess I blocked the memory. What an absurd amount! Then $15,750 a couple years later, which I was rounding up to 16k (but why? let's be precise).

I didn't really want to know that in the 2 years of my MA and 7 years of my PhD (so far) IU's fees have eaten $11,000 of the meager stipend they pay me to teach, but now I do. #invoiceIU

Graduate student teachers do an incredible quantity of the labor of educating students. We are students, yes, but we're also the entry-level work force of the academy. We should be paid as such.

I've been an instructor of record that whole time, sometimes designing my own syllabi, with a 2/2 load. When I started, our stipends were ~16k. For some people, they've gone up to ~18k, but thats after almost a decade.
