A challenge I took from this chapter is “I advise you to keep an eye out for new social platforms and/or niche social platforms that might be THE place where YOUR customers hang out” (McDonald, 2023, p. 451).
#STCO422 What I found interesting is that your email list can be considered more valuable than your number of social media followers or subscribers. One thing that challenged me was that getting people to opt-in to your emails is considered a big deal.
McDonald says, “Getting customers to “opt-in” to subscribe to your email alerts is more than just a cheap date. It’s intimate” (McDonald, 2023, p. 442).
#stco422 One thing that surprised me in chapter 9 is where McDonald says, “TikTok is meant to “addict” users by showing them more and more content that they find engaging” (McDonald, 2023, p. 390).
We have talked about TikTok in class quite a lot, and one thing that I remember from reading this chapter is how we talked about how watching TikTok is always something you will like.
McDonald says, “By “following” companies you actually “like,” you’ll experience them marketing to you, and you can then reverse engineer this for your own company” (McDonald, 431). I would like to follow companies that market well so I can learn from them.
#stco422 One thing about this chapter that I found intriguing is that you can pay for your pins to essentially be boosted or promoted. I did not realize how relevant Pinterest is to marketing.
#stco422 One thing that intrigued me about this chapter is what McDonald says about video content. “The video is easy to consume but hard to produce” (McDonald, 2023, p. 340). This is not something that ever clicked with me until reading this chapter, but it is true.
I watch so many videos on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, but when I try to make any, it takes a long time. This whole chapter challenged me because I do not use YouTube regularly; I only use it occasionally to look up how to do something.
We use both Instagram and Facebook for the communication department, but our class mainly focuses on Instagram because of its popularity among our main target audience.
#stco422 One thing that surprised me about this chapter was the amount of daily users Instagram has. The book says, “Instagram boasts five hundred million users a day” (McDonald, p. 281). I knew Instagram had a lot of users but knowing the actual number was surprising to me.
With that many users, there is a lot of content posted and I am surprised that the platform can handle that much activity. This chapter connects to our discussions in class about how Instagram is popular and why it is our primary focus.
I also believe that it was a little excessive to change a recognizable logo to a letter and the iconic Twitter blue to black. On a home screen, Twitter stood out more than X does.
#stco422 I think that one obvious way Twitter changed when becoming X was its name and branding. It went from a blue icon to a black x, which is a drastic change, and it wipes away brand recognition.
