Imagine betting on a player to receive a yellow card, and then watching him go and earn one almost to script. That is the allegation at the centre of the Elye Wahi case, and it is not match-fixing. It is something subtler called spot-fixing.

Most people think fixing a football match means losing on purpose. It really does not have to. Sometimes it is just one booking.

Wahi, the Ivorian striker, was arrested by French police on 29 May 2026 after the Ligue de Football Professionnel flagged suspicious betting patterns around him receiving a yellow card in Nice's match against Metz on 17 May.

He was booked in the 35th minute for a late challenge. The Marseille prosecutor is investigating allegations of organised fraud and sports corruption. He has not been charged, the probe is ongoing, and he has continued to play, starting Ivory Coast's World Cup opener against Ecuador.

Now let me teach you something quick.

Match-fixing is the manipulation of the overall result of a game while Spot-fixing is the manipulation of a specific, isolated event within a game, a yellow card, a throw-in, a no-look moment, without necessarily affecting who wins.

The final score in the Nice match was 0-0. Nobody alleges the result was rigged. It was just the booking.

FIFA treats both with extreme severity. Under Article 11 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, manipulating a match or any aspect of it carries a minimum five-year ban from all football and a substantial fine, rising to a lifetime ban in serious cases.

The FIFA Code of Ethics adds further prohibitions on betting involvement and on any failure to report an approach.

Crucially, FIFA can act worldwide and independently of any criminal court. A player can be cleared in a courtroom and still be banned by football, or vice versa.

The investigation is still on. No sanction has been issued. But the principle is clear. You do not have to fix the score to fix a match in the eyes of the law.
