Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write.

أي قسوة هذه التي تطارد الناس حتى في أبسط تفاصيل الحياة ؟

استُشهدت هداية البطريخي متأثرةً بجراحها التي أُصيبت بها في قصف حي الرمال بمدينة غزة، أثناء مرافقتها أبناء شقيقها الشهيد علاء لشراء ملابس العيد لهم.

خرجت لتحاول أن تصنع للأطفال شيئًا من فرحة العيد، وأن تخفف عنهم وجع فقدان والدهم، لكن القصف حول تلك اللحظات البسيطة إلى فاجعة جديدة تُضاف إلى وجع غزة المستمر.

في غزة، حتى الذهاب لشراء ملابس العيد لم يعد أمرًا عاديًا - فقد تنتهي الطريق بقصف، أو بفقد، أو بوداع لا يعود بعده أحد.

داخل تابوت خشبي لمدة 12 يوماً.

وكيف احتجزه جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي داخل تابوت خشبي بباب من القضبان الحديدية،

حيث أبقوه في ظلام دامس مقيد اليدين والقدمين،

وكانوا يبقونه على قيد الحياة بربع كوب من الكاكاو ومرق اللحم عبر أنبوب صغير يمر من أحد الثقوب الثلاثة الصغيرة.

وكان نبهان قد اختُطف من مدرسة الرافعي في غزة أثناء توجه المدنيين إلى أحد الملاجئ.

وطلب منه الجنود العمل كمخبر، والدخول إلى أنفاق حماس نيابة عنهم، وركوب دباباتهم.

وعندما رفض، عرضوه للتعذيب بالكهرباء.

وعندما لم يفلح ذلك أيضاً، جروه وهو معصوب العينين إلى التابوت.

ويقول إن الجنود كانوا يعلمون أنه لا يملك أي معلومات ليدلي بها، لكنهم أرادوا إلحاق أكبر قدر ممكن من الألم به.

ويضيف: "في تلك اللحظة تتمنى الموت ولكنك لا تجده".

وبعد إطلاق سراحه، كان يصاب بثلاث إلى أربع نوبات تشنج يومياً، ولم يتلقَ أي علاج طبي لمدة خمسة إلى ستة أيام.

This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day.
