The EFF in its discipline & the ANC in its response, have today amplified the very service delivery issues the protest was about.
Citizens see that govt suddenly has the ability to mobilise resources - but only when their position is threatened
It was a flop, but not for the EFF
The ANC belittling today’s protest and calling it a “flop” is exactly what they always do - try to be cute and quirky when the evidence that they are a defunct government is overwhelming.
For as long as they continue deflecting from their failures they must prepare to lose power
I was just in Kibera, Kenya where very similar protests have erupted. People have been killed and wounded. The message is clear: Africa is not yet free.
@IanCameron23 EFF has by far achieved its aim. Four days of uninterrupted power supply, law enforcement on the street and not in the barracks, ministers actively supervising their departments, Ian Cameron tweeting about them every second, that's not small feat! It's called publicity stunt
the police state is also visible with its show off ammunition. a reckless show of the disposability of life and the prioritization of violence over human life. this is the working of the state regardless of who’s in power.
it’s interesting that the main scope of view is that “protests are paralyzing the city” what about the inequality, poverty & lack of food that is being entrenched by the state? Is that not worse than paralyzing the city.
Law enforcement in South Africa comes out in numbers only when people are protesting not when people are being killed , robbed , human trafficked or raped . You will literally never see them in number for anything else
This disproportionate response from the state should scare us all. For me, this signals a government that knows its days are numbered…so they tighten their grip on power & inflict violence on black people. Watch them ramp up stealing from public coffers before eating time is up
This is nauseating.
The police are intended to protect the public
Not issue them with intimidation warnings like “if you don’t feel the water canon you will feel the rubber bullets”
The entire ideology and ethos of SAPS is nauseating: Corruption, Ineffectiveness and Brutality
We condemn the excessive use of force that occurred in Braamfontein ,19 March 2023. We urge all protesters to seek legal assistance by calling our toll free hotline: 0800 212 111
