A YEW TREE CLAIMING THE SPIRITUAL LEGACY OF AN ABANDONED IRISH ABBEY -

This majestic Yew tree with a twisted trunk has been growing for centuries among the remains of the cloister of the medieval Franciscan abbey of Muckross, in the very picturesque landscapes of the Killarney National Park on the shores of Lough Leane.

The abbey was built around 1448 CE, on the remains of an ancient Nemethon, a Gallic word describing the sacred sanctuary where the Celts practiced their cults, which had already fallen into disrepair. It was an area filled with legends regarding elves, fairies and sylvan spirits, a legacy of pre-Christian cults which many Irish continued to follow even after their catholic conversion.

The site was chosen when Cormac MacCarthy Mor, king of Desmond, dreamed that he should build an abbey nearby a Carraig na Chiuil, a Rock of Music. He sent men to search for it, and they were about to return empty-handed when they heard the most beautiful music coming from a rock within the ruins of the Nemethon - and Cormac founded the abbey there.

The friary became the burial place of many important Gaelic families, and was destroyed, vandalized and reconstructed many times. It was abandoned after Cromwell sacked and burned it down in 1654 CE, persecuting the remaining friars.
