Beavers cut down trees for two main reasons: food and building materials. Beavers are herbivores and their diet mainly consists of bark, twigs and leaves. They prefer the bark of softwoods, such as aspen, willow, and cottonwood, but they will eat hardwoods if necessary. Beavers will gnaw at the bark until they reach the softer wood inside.
