I feel utterly bereft at the loss of Chadwick Boseman. I feel so much grief for him and his work and his family. But also, this is tapping into the collective cultural grief that’s been simmering for me and most Black people. Just so much unbelievably sadness
We grieve all sorts of relationships, objects, ideas, places, expectations. Sometimes the grief doesn’t make obvious sense. A celebrity might wreck us whereas a relative’s loss might result in milder or more complicated feelings.
Diversity is who is in the room.
Inclusion is who has influence in that room.
Anti-racism is a mindset, way of being, and goal for a group of people in a room.
These are not interchangeable terms.
We are not only healing from what we’ve directly experienced but also the unhealed wounds of those who raised us. Interrupting these cycles is difficult, sacred work.
