EN’s @AmandaManyame was the first representative of civil society to speak, after just two UN member states had intervened, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to tackle the challenges and opportunities posed by #AI.
When victims of #deepfake image-based sexual abuse contact social media & messaging platforms to ask for abusive content to be removed, they're often ignored. Better monitoring & enforcement mechanisms are needed, says EN's @AmandaManyame https://t.co/GpkhSbT13A✍️@marielpadilla_

Trying to apply copyright laws would not effectively protect a celebrity like Taylor Swift, or a member of the public, from deepfake image-based sexual abuse as these laws weren't designed to give this sort of protection. If a victim tried to use copyright laws they would not be able to legally satisfy all of the legal requirements stipulated by that law & would therefore not obtain legal recourse, explains @equalitynow's #DigitalRights legal expert @AmandaManyame
Amanda is author of new policy brief 'Deepfake image-based sexual abuse, tech-facilitated sexual exploitation and the law', by @AUDRights@equalitynow

Our Global Executive Director Mona Sinha @monanyhk noted:
🗨️"Globally and nationally, laws exist, but clear definitions are lacking. These gaps and inconsistencies make it difficult to identify and prosecute perpetrators of digital gender-based violence."
Misogyny online is a reality everywhere but especially in Kenya, says @EqualityNow’s @AmandaManyame. We must review and enforce laws to protect women and girls in the digital world.
“As one of Africa’s leaders in internet uptake, the rapid online connectivity and use of camera-ready technology in #Kenya has exposed many women and girls to online sexual predators,” EN’s @muhuha. #EndSexualExploitation
“Misogynistic behaviors that are prevalent in our physical world are being replicated and amplified online. To protect women and girls in the digital space in #Kenya, we need to assess if laws are sufficiently implemented,” EN’s @AmandaManyame. #EndSexualExploitation
