@faithregan333 A lot of people haven't heard of the new cities trend before. It's interesting that the Malaysian government has put so much effort into Putrajaya and even though it's considered "successful" within the new cities world, the rest of the has no idea about it.
@faithregan333 It's definitely funny how the article frame Putrajaya as an unknown city. We've seen in class that Putrajaya is treated as the gold standard of new cities and acts as an inspiration for a lot of new cities. But the new cities world is kind of a bubble #newcitiesmcgill
@charlottepink38 I definitely agree, this reminds me of the seasteading project in French Polynesia that was shaped like indigenous plants to seem more inclusive to locals. It's makes for a unique design, but I don't think many people are fooled that these designs are more green. #NewCitiesMcGill
@dakreing In class we've talked about how a lot of New Cities have South-South policy mobility. Though this city claims to be influenced by Dubai, there's definitely a lot of western influence including the large church and German International University students. #NewCitiesMcgill
I also find it interesting that the project is being funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, which usually goes towards charitable causes. I don't really understand how a new smart city is a charitable cause.
I think Belmont is really interesting. We've seen other billionaires, like Marc Lore try to build new cities. Similar to Telosa, development is stagnant in Belmont and there hasn't been an update on the project in years. #NewCitiesMcGill

Gates bought the land for Belmont in Arizona. Lore has also stated that Arizona is a contender for Telosa's location. I know that there are also some historical new cities in Arizona, like Arcosanti. Is there a reason why new cities would be drawn to this state?
@ryan_rocho I think the fact that it is based off of real land makes it more official than something that is fully online. Since there is actual land claim it makes turn it into a libertarian group to an actual nation. #NewCitiesMcGill
@MakenaMar @ryan_rocho I also question how libertarian the city can actually be. The article claims that users are still subject to the laws of their country, so how can it be libertarian? or even an independent country? #NewCitiesMcGill
This wouldn't just include reorienting routes, but adding route and increasing bus frequency. Though, this would increase spending in upper class areas and possibly take funding away from captive riders.
I'm really interested to see how the West Island will adapt to the REM. The West Island is extremely car centric and the current transit system is slow, unreliable and inefficient. #TransportGeogMcGill, https://t.co/44uxFOarmC
It isn't unreasonable for current mayors to demand larger parking lots at west island REM stations. Without them, it's very possible that users won't have reliable access to the stations. The entire bus system would need to be redone.
I think this article is interesting because it questions how to properly integrate a bike lane into a neighbourhood. A bike lane in Chicago replaced parking spaces and a hardware store might need to shut down.

This article reminds me of our discussion about the ITE. The ITE system is flawed, but it acknowledges that different businesses have different parking needs. Hardware stores sell heavy goods that probably can't be transported by bike.
@ChavanneEmilia I wonder how developers around MENA will deal with local bedouins, especially if those tribes also have a semi-nomadic lifestyle. #NewCitiesMcGill
@ChavanneEmilia I wonder if this is a larger pattern among new cities in MENA. We've had various discussions in about how locals are removed from their homes and mistreated when new cities are built. #NewCitiesMcGill
