Anyone I've interacted with professionally knows my driving theory of action boils down to believing in principals. After the last few years, it's amazing we have any left! Must read from @LearningAccel https://t.co/ygtcc72pyB
@NCTQ Absolutely! And the current system isn't working well for anyone - teachers feel stressed trying to find a sub to cover leaves and subs feel unsupported as they step in. It also reinforces systemic inequality because it relies on existing networks and relationships.
@CEDR_US In California we estimate that a university student would pay approx $350 out of pocket to become a sub! The processing fee ($100 of that $350) is waived this year, but slated to return.
@NCTQ Q6: It's also time to rethink how the job is structured. Attract a different pool of candidates with a redesigned role - full-time, benefited, embedded in a specific school community, with PD and a pathway into jobs in education for those that want it. https://t.co/tbZahNTnf4
@ERStrategies@NCTQ Yes! Especially true for folks with a less linear path, coming to teaching later in life. And many of them are checking out teaching through substitute teaching, a great recruitment pool for alternative pathways.
@NCTQ A4: How are you supporting teachers as they become parents? Is it on the teacher to find their sub? Do you pay for long-term subs to do shadow days and joint planning with the permanent teacher? #HireGreatTeachers
@NCTQ A4: Whoops - got my questions mixed up :) For this one....check out the Teacher Immersion Fellowship Program - it’s a fantastic working example of a multi-agency partnership to recruit and place education students to serve as substitute teachers. https://t.co/q5sizVjUmn
@NCTQ Q2: This fall we anticipate an increased reliance on long-term subs - an acceleration of a pre-pandemic trend. Invest in their PD and ongoing support to keep these essential educators on the job.
@NCTQ For folks who aren't entering teaching directly from college - like the people checking out teaching through substitute teaching - the idea of taking on additional student loans to get a credential is a major barrier.
NEW: Substitute teaching has played an increasingly important role during the pandemic, which makes accurate and insightful coverage all the more critical.

Why does the California emergency substitute teacher permit cost $100? Do we need one at all? Many states have no state permit. Others have a free permit. In California most substitute teachers have to pay out of pocket $100 EVERY YEAR for a permit.
