More people are surviving strokes than ever before in the UK.
But their hopes of getting better are being dashed because of a lack of physiotherapists.
We highlight critical workforce shortages with @ACPIN_UK and @TheStrokeAssoc.

Can specialized physical therapy help you to live longer with Parkinson’s? What if physical therapy did more than improve balance and reduce falls? A new Dutch study by Ypinga, Bloem and colleagues just dropped and the results are fascinating. Specialized physical therapy, like that provided through the ParkinsonNet model, was linked to a modest but real reduction in mortality for people w/ Parkinson’s.
Key Points:
- Specialized physical therapy for Parkinson’s was linked to an 11% lower risk of death compared to usual care.
- The benefit was specific to therapy focused on Parkinson’s related challenges like gait, falls and pneumonia prevention.
- The findings suggest networked Parkinson focused care like ParkinsonNet may extend life by reducing complications.
My take: I am a big believer that physical therapy is important for Parkinson's, and that it is under-utilized. Here are 5 points that stuck w/ me about this paper. 1- Movement matters and physical therapy for Parkinson’s is more than making folks walk better. It may help you live longer by reducing serious complications. 2- Parkinson specific training counts and not all therapy is equal. 3- Avoiding falls and pneumonia saves lives. Specialized therapy may help prevent them. 4- Team-based care leads to the best outcomes (speech, occupational and physical therapy). 5- Don’t just ask for therapy, ask for a Parkinson trained therapist, if one is available. What is your plan for Parkinson's? https://t.co/e9eKnkGsxz
