[Amathole Oceans Economy Indaba charts practical path towards empowering coastal communities]
The second and final day of the Amathole Rural Oceans Economy Indaba concluded with a strong commitment from government, industry leaders and coastal stakeholders to remove longstanding barriers that have prevented rural fishing communities from fully participating in South Africa's growing ocean economy.
Building on the robust discussions held during the opening day, delegates agreed that while the ocean economy presents enormous opportunities for employment creation, entrepreneurship and local economic development, rural communities continue to face systemic challenges that limit their ability to compete within the sector. These include inadequate fishing equipment, limited processing and storage infrastructure, insufficient access to funding, costly and lengthy licensing processes, poor road infrastructure, limited access to formal markets, uncertainty around fishing rights and land ownership, as well as complex regulatory requirements that often discourage aspiring entrepreneurs.

[ADM Men's Conference Encourages Open Dialogue on Men's Mental Health and Wellbeing]
The Amathole District Municipality's Integrated Employee Wellness, Occupational Health and Safety Unit hosted a Men's Conference for male employees from the Amahlathi and Great Kei satellite offices on 23 June 2026 in Qumrha. The conference provided a dedicated platform for men to openly engage on challenges they encounter both in the workplace and in their personal lives, issues that often have a significant impact on their mental health, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life.
Held during June, a month that recognizes men while also promoting Mental Health Awareness, the programme emphasised the importance of creating safe spaces where men can freely express themselves without fear of judgement, where they can be more vocal in addressing their issues, sighting that "men too have feelings and the stigma of men do not cry should be done away with". Following this tone, participants were encouraged to challenge societal stereotypes that discourage emotional vulnerability, reinforcing the message that men, too, experience emotional struggles and should feel empowered to seek support when needed.

[TO THE YOUTH OF AMATHOLE DISTRICT | JUNE 16]
Fifty years ago, young people changed the course of history. They were students. They were courageous. They were the Class of 1976. Their sacrifice was not in vain. It opened doors that had been shut, broke the walls that had stood for generations, and ignited a fire that still burns today.
This Youth Month, we say to you: you are that fireβs continuation.
The Freedom Charter declared that the doors of learning and culture shall be opened to all. Those doors were opened with a price paid in blood and courage by young people who refused to accept less than their full humanity. Now those doors stand open for you. Walk through them boldly β with knowledge, with purpose, and with the same unshakeable belief in your own dignity that drove the Class of 1976.
Amathole District Municipality honours your potential. We honour your voice. We honour your future.

Amathole District Municipality (ADM) convened its District Mayors Forum (DIMAFO) on 11 June 2026 in Stutterheim, Kolorha. The meeting brought together Executive Mayors, Mayors, Municipal Managers, government departments, external stakeholders, and key sector representatives to strengthen intergovernmental relations and advance collaborative service delivery initiatives across the district.
Opening the session, ADM Executive Mayor, Councillor Anele Ntsangani, reaffirmed the municipality's commitment to enhancing partnerships with government sectors and stakeholders to ensure sustainable, community-driven service delivery. He emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing challenges facing the district and its six local municipalities while driving development initiatives that improve the lives of ADM communities.
In his opening remarks, Councillor Ntsangani acknowledged the challenges experienced by both the district and local municipalities but highlighted that the pursuit of service delivery excellence remains a key priority. He further noted the municipality's improving financial position and celebrated the significant milestone of the institution approving a funded budget for the forthcoming financial year.
"This is a year of solving challenges to ensure continuous stability and an operational district municipality," said Ntsangani.
The Executive Mayor further stressed the importance of having a positive and solution-oriented approach among government institutions and stakeholders. He called for the dismantling of negative attitudes that hinder progress and encouraged all role players to embrace collaboration as a catalyst for meaningful development.
On 11 June 2026, Amathole District Municipality (ADM) hosted a two-day Public Liaison Officers (PLOs) Forum at the Calgary Conference Centre. Facilitated by the Eastern Cape Office of the Premier, the forum brought together representatives from provincial departments, municipalities and stakeholders involved in citizen engagement and service delivery.
The forum aimed to strengthen the implementation of the Presidential Hotline Programme, a platform that enables citizens to report service delivery challenges, lodge complaints, make enquiries and provide feedback to government.
"Public Liaison Officers, Customer Care Officers, Communications Practitioners and Community Liaison Officers all contribute towards one common goal ensuring that communities have access to government services and information" he said.
Furthermore, Mr Tshangana encouraged practitioners to move beyond receiving complaints and actively involve communities in finding solutions to local challenges. "If the most vulnerable person in our community can understand what government is doing and how they can access services, then we have succeeded," he added.
