Leroy “Satchel” Paige home site
Mr. Paige was a famous baseball player and played in many leagues. He broke social norms and was the first black pitcher in the American League. This was one of the hardest places to find. It felt rude to take pictures of someone’s house.
Franklin house
The Franklin was owed by Dr.James A. Franklin, and he let black celebrities stay here during the Jim Crow era. His house is now a gallery to display the history. This site is one of the best preserved places on the trail.
St.Martin de Porres Hospital
This hospital was created by the black community of mobile so they could get treated since they were not able to go to the cities hospitals. This site is now a nursing home and the name was changed. I feel like the name change erases the history.
@WilleshaL2027@africatownhpf@kemjacks Yes the overall experience was immersive. Hearing someone voice Cudjo gave the experience more meaning. You could hear the pain in his voice as he talked about his experience.
@kemjacks@africatownhpf Since the whole Lantern Walk is about giving thanks and honoring the ancestors, stoping at the church gives thanks to God. Church also gives people a sense of community.
There were lots church and church like structures in African town. I believe they are a symbolize hope. When hearing the teaching of the Bible, it can inspire you to make a change. Church is filled with song, pray, and shouting to heal what you can’t put into words.
@LukeJSouth@africatownhpf@kemjacks We could address this problem by first fixing the problems within our own families. Then start small with community events during holidays. Also once you leave your community, come back and support others to bring them up with you. You didn’t get to where you are by yourself.
One of the reoccurring themes we saw when visiting Africa Town is a decrease in tight-knit community. Not only in the black community but in the world as a whole. People are so individualist due to rising social and political difference. @africatownhpf#AFRusa25@kemjacks
At the heritage house, I learned that Cudjo Lewis real name was Kossola. It was changed because it was too hard for the enslavers to pronounce. This can be seen today with ethnic names. People tend to go by a nickname, which is not fair because it erases one’s culture.
@WilleshaL2027@kemjacks Not only that but finding a sense of community in a place that is unfamiliar to you. I'm not from Mobile but I felt like I belonged and not an outsider at this event.
@ready_josi28792 @kemjacks I love that she was there to show her art. Even today we can see the reminisce of Black Art Movement. People are always going to find a way to express themselves whether through art, music or another type of media.
Music is a detox. When everything feels like its going wrong you need something to focus on to keep you grounded. After talking to India, I'm going to be more mindful and try to feel the music more instead of just listening to it.
Sound Healing Session with India
This was my favorite part of the festival. When talking to India she said she plays because she loves to and her music comes from within. It keeps her connected to the ancestor and then God. PT.1 #AFRusa25@kemjacks#historicavenue
