Huge thanks to the artists (writers, illustrators and photographers) who made Issue 07 possible.
Shout-out to @dr_franksmd for sharing her story with us, @AmberShumake for her fabulous cover story photography, and Shilo Urban for writing our amazing cover story. #OneToKnow
@JonathanDFW I’m so sorry this happened. It’s interesting how people are tagging Mayor Mattie when the Bass family and other elite literally bought her the election.
Her life wasn’t lost. @ColumbusPolice took it.
She wasn’t a woman.
She was a 15 yr old girl.
Don’t worry about the body cam footage. We’ve seen enough “officer involved shootings” (ahem, state sanctioned murders). Whatever’s on the video doesn’t justify killing a child.
This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life. We do not know all of the details. There is body-worn camera footage of the incident. We are working to review it as soon as possible. BCI is on the scene conducting an independent investigation . . .
In, I
breathe
the fear of all people
who are afraid of Otherness
and what a world rooted in equity means for them.
Out,I
breathe
hope for a world where
all beings everywhere
are safe, free, and
equal in the eyes
of the law and
one another.
In, I
breathe
the suffering of generations
whose Blackness
poses a threat
to white body supremacy.
Out, I
breathe
courage to act in ways
that create a world where
the safety of Black people
is a certainty.
BREAKING: The defense at the murder trial of former Officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd rested its case without putting Chauvin on the stand, presenting a total of two days of testimony. Closing arguments are set for Monday. https://t.co/Msu6NlHfz6
@wfaaizzy What steps are they taking to help officers regulate their nervous systems and release stress without putting a bullet in a Black person’s body?
Thinking of Daunte Wright's family. Thinking of the greater Minneapolis community. Thinking of all the Black folks who wake up to this news again and again and again and again and again. Thinking of the toll is takes on your body, the air it pulls from your lungs. Every time.
Police killed 121 people in traffic stops in 2020.
Black people are pulled over at disproportionate rates.
Sandra Bland. Philando Castile. Daunte Wright. All their deaths began with a traffic stop. Remove police from traffic enforcement. We can't keep adding names to this list.
