You learn more than just business in reading biographies.
In my first @AmbitionPod episode, I read the biography on S.I. Newhouse, with an important reminder:
“Though the Advance's demands on him were substantial, Newhouse always set aside some time each week for his vivacious wife.”
2nd episode of the @AmbitionPod took 40 hours to make:
- 17 hours reading, highlighting, & taking notes
- 14 hours building the outline
- 3 hours transferring notes to Readwise
- 2.5 hours recording
- 3.5 hours editing & publishing
The Wright Brothers have one of the greatest stories of ambition ever told. The book by David McCullough is fantastic, and I highly recommend it.
Available now on all podcasting platforms and YouTube.
They were two bicycle mechanics from Ohio with no formal engineering training and no funding who set out to solve a problem that had stumped the best minds in the world.
It took them four years of learning, experimenting, and overcoming numerous challenges, but they accomplished what many people around the world thought was impossible.
This is the story of the Wright Brothers, and we have a lot to learn from them.
Episode #2 of the Ambition podcast (@AmbitionPod) is live now on all podcasting platforms and YouTube!
I'm having so much fun with @AmbitionPod so far.
It's a puzzle with every episode, and I love how it all comes together in the end.
Plan on creating it for a very long time.
Next episode comes out on Wednesday featuring the Wright Brothers.
1st episode of the @AmbitionPod took 36 hours to make:
- 18 hours reading, highlighting, and taking notes in the book
- 10 hours building the outline and notes
- 3 hours transferring notes to Readwise
- 2 hours recording
- 3 hours editing
It’s a fascinating story with a lot to learn.
Available now on all podcasting platforms and YouTube.
S.I. Newhouse built the largest fortune of any American publisher ever assembled, and at 13 years old, a man laughed him out of a job interview.
"I can't hire the likes of you. Your head doesn't even come up to the top of the desk."
That was just one of MANY times S.I. was underestimated and his entire life he'd fight to overcome every type of challenge you can imagine.
He was the 5'3" son of poor Jewish immigrants and at 13 he had to work full-time to help support his family.
His career journey is INSANE...
But by the time he died, his company, Advance Publications, was a national media empire that owned dozens of daily newspapers with millions of readers, magazines like Vogue, Glamour, and House & Garden, radio and TV stations, and more.
I just released Episode 1 of my new podcast, Ambition, on him.
Full story is wild.
The show is available wherever you listen to podcasts.
Published the first episode of Ambition, my new podcast, this week
The episode covers S.I. Newhouse, who created the multi-billion-dollar Advance Publications empire
Going to play around with this video format for YouTube given it's a solo show, not an interview
For the last three weeks, I've been quietly working on something new.
80+ hours of research and production across two episodes later, the Ambition Podcast (@AmbitionPod) is live, a show about the world's most ambitious people from history.
Episode 1 is about S.I. Newhouse Sr., a billionaire almost no one knew much about. I read an obscure book from 1983 to create the episode on S.I.
He started working full-time at 13 and gradually pulled his family out of poverty... but he went way beyond that.
He built one of the most powerful publishing empires in American history, Advance Publications. Didn't stop until he died in 1979. The empire still exists today.
I love the format of deeply researched podcasts about topics I'm obsessed with.
Interviews are great, but some of my favorite shows are solo podcasts or two hosts talking about a subject after having done a great deal of research.
I wanted to create my own version. So here we are.
Episode 2 is on the Wright Brothers and drops next week.
I'm publishing every week or two from here.
The show is live on all podcasting platforms and YouTube.
Would love for you to check out the show and share it with a friend!
