Mixed race WOC | ADHD diagnosis at 34 AMA | Rethinking how to do small business with radical politics | Current obsession: mechanical keyboards | She/her
This week's #Techish touched on an issue I've been struggling with lately:
Is it even possible to do capitalism ethically when the system itself is structured to do harm?
My answer would be... yes and no.

if we're gonna talk about not romanticizing french people as revolutionaries, i think that should also extend to the obsession with the guillotine as a symbol of class revolution. the guillotine were one of the violent tools that the french used to punish its former colonies
Starting to figure out how to steer my hyperfocus without ditching my responsibilities, feels pretty great! Getting ADHD coaching was such a good call.
@alexisohanian This may seem true, but as someone with ADHD who struggles with both, the original advice works without either!
"Figure out how you naturally work best and get other people to respect it" = reflection+analysis+communication. Doesn't rely on discipline/focus, even if they'd help.
Challenge em to step aside ~ board seats are ez because it's not a full-time job (yet still has influence) + no one is going to be at your funeral saying "We're all here today bc of what a great job Alexis did in that board seat."
Women: "hey corp, it would be better if your employees didn't have to endure sexual assault?"
Corp: "we hear you! That's why we support this program to get more girls into a career of lifelong frustration, gaslighting, and sexism! Oh and did I mention we do a float at pride?!"
I did a lot of the heavy lifting early on, as my ADHD pushed me through booking a venue, photographer, videographer, and dress appointments with most of my loved ones.
But now my fiancé's picked it up too, it's so fun to look at invitations and cake with him! We're a good team.
I was supposed to get married in July 2021. In May 2020 my gut told me to push it back. I'm SO glad we did.
Postponing so early was self-care. We'd already booked the key suppliers pre-COVID, so as soon as they confirmed the new date we were done with wedding planning for 2020.
Turns out we needed that break to reflect and agree on some important changes. Now we've set those in motion, I'm getting excited about the wedding again, after not thinking about it for months!
We definitely benefited from the opportunity to just sit with our plans for a while.
Imperialism doesn't just happen because the West doesn't like this or that skin color or culture. It happens because capitalism needs to secure captive labor, resources, and markets to survive. Race is a construct which justifies this process, not an inherent status preceding it.
If we see imperialism merely as consequence of racial prejudice, we'll be duped when power mobilizes "diversity" as its new enabling discourse. Desegregated troops, Black defense secretaries, non-white client states—are all symbols of modern empire, not evidence of its undoing.
@Norm_Farrell there's no way a CEO is going to say "I can't put the extra effort in for $10 million. But for $20M? I will." And yet every time you hear of a raise to $20M, there's a quote from the board saying "the CEO needs to be motivated." Makes no sense, yet it's accepted as Business 101.
We discovered higher pay doesn't suddenly transform people into better employees. But when you remove money as an obstacle to life, they can bring their full selves to work.
There's tons of research on this. It's a shame more companies don't realize the benefits of higher pay.
