Disclaimer : I don't know everything, I have one (1) experience of wheelchair user who used both bad and good chairs, and I share what I learned.
There was a time in our history when people needed to create their own wheelchairs and crutches because it wasn't something that was accessible to them. Now there are dolls being made for disabled children that are just like them!

The Moon type, a raised line code based on print letters. Invented by Dr William Moon who lost his vision from scarlet fever. It is almost unknown in US, but it is easier to learn & tactually simpler than Braille. Today, it can also be generated with computer software. #dishist
Hand controls for automobiles enabled disabled people to drive. The 1930s & 1940s designs, however, were not user-friendly and were dangerous to operate. Newer designs combined brakes and clutch on one lever.
