~ Firsthand Account from Nigeria’s Middle Belt: Christian Villages Torched, Families Flee, Churches Burned, David Patrikarakos Reports from Plateau State

Journalist David Patrikarakos has published a detailed frontline report from Plateau State, Nigeria, documenting destruction and violence against Christian communities in towns including Mangu, Gwet, Bokkos, and Jos.

Patrikarakos describes driving through a “vast, scorched landscape” where once‑fertile fields lie in ash and smoke. Villagers told him:

“They roasted the pastor and his wife alive in the church… we heard their screams.”

Numerous churches appear as “burned‑out shell after burned‑out shell,” with broken crosses and shattered windows. Homes have been gutted, and fields that “shone gold in the sun” are now lifeless.

Victims highlighted in the report include:

Jonas (29), who stood amid his family’s ruined home and told Patrikarakos they had “been terrified” and forced to flee.

Local Christian leaders, who said communities “cannot farm” and “cannot send children to school.”

Pastors and community members, who described homes and places of worship being deliberately burned.

Displaced families, who expressed they “have nowhere to return.”

Survivors in several villages, who spoke of relatives killed during attacks and of churches being singled out first.

Local leaders report repeated night raids by armed men descending on sleeping communities, killing residents and burning homes. One Christian leader told Patrikarakos:

“We are being displaced. Our people cannot farm. Our children cannot go to school… tell the world about the genocide we Christians are experiencing here.”

His dispatch also recounts the Christmas Massacres of 2023, when mobs attacked at least 17 communities, killing scores of people, injuring hundreds, and leaving over 1,300 homes destroyed.

Witnesses described attackers shouting: “Allahu Akbar”

Calling villagers “infidels”

Christian leaders interviewed said churches were frequently targeted, and attackers often vowed to destroy sites of worship.

Patrikarakos’s report paints a grim picture of widespread destruction, systematic targeting of Christians, and mass displacement in the Middle Belt, including numerous firsthand testimonies from survivors and local officials.
