The last survivor of the transatlantic slave trade was not identified until 2020 , eighty years after she died.
She was two years old when she was taken. She lived to 1940. She wore her hair in Yoruba style her entire life, in rural Alabama, where everyone could see it.
Matilda McCrear.
She came on the Clotilda, the last slave ship to reach America, in 1860 — fifty-two years after the trade had been outlawed, on a bet between rich men.
She arrived with her mother and sister. They were separated from the rest almost immediately.
She grew up picking cotton. She had fourteen children. She lived with a white German-born man for decades in a state where that was not legally possible, and she refused to take his name.
And in 1931, at about seventy-three, she walked into a courthouse in Selma and filed a claim for compensation for having been enslaved.
She was refused. It was reported in the local paper as a curiosity.
She died in 1940 and was buried in an unmarked grave, and for eighty years nobody knew who she had been — until a researcher in England found the 1931 claim in a newspaper archive and started pulling the thread.
She kept her hair the way her mother had done it. For eighty years, on a cotton farm in Alabama, in plain view.
That was her whole statement, and it took us until 2020 to read it.
She won the Academy Award in 1940 and was not allowed to sit with her own cast.
The hotel had a no-Black policy. They made an exception for the night so she could attend her own win — and sat her at a small table against the back wall, away from everybody.
Hattie McDaniel. She was the first Black person ever nominated for an Oscar, and the first to win one.
Her studio had to ask the Ambassador Hotel to let her in the building at all. She came in, sat at a two-person table at the back with her escort, collected the award, gave a short speech, and sat back down at the back.
She had also not been permitted to attend the film's premiere in Atlanta the year before. Her face was removed from the programmes distributed there.
She spent her career being criticised from inside her own community for playing maids, and answered with the line everyone remembers: that she would rather play a maid for seven hundred dollars a week than be one for seven dollars.
Both of those things are true at once, and that is the trap, not her failure.
She asked to be buried in Hollywood Cemetery, among the industry she had worked in. The cemetery did not accept Black people. She was buried at Rosedale instead.
In 1999 the cemetery's new owner offered to move her. Her family said no — she was where she was. They placed a memorial there instead.
Her actual Oscar, which she left to Howard University, has been missing since the 1960s. Nobody knows where it is.
🚨@AngieNixon SCHOOLS an Ashley Moody disruptor at a press conference:
“The Black Panther Party saw that people didn’t have access to quality healthcare. They popped up free health clinics because the government was failing to ensure that people had a safety net. They started free health clinics and that’s been replicated by organizations all across the country who are in communities when people like @AshleyMoodyFL decide to vote to end healthcare for over 440,000 people here in the state of Florida!”
Happy heavenly birthday to Fannie Lou Hamer! A Mississippi sharecropper who became one of the boldest voices for voting rights this country has ever heard, she proved that courage is contagious. Let's carry that courage with us this election season and honor her legacy at the ballot box.
Black Americans Delineation got Haitian Americans calling out their tethers — and that’s one of our demands. Salute to this woman for standing on principles, logic, and business.
Judge Mathis responds to Judge Judy’s recent comments, where she said, “If you don’t like this country, go somewhere else.”
