I just bought my first-ever electronic components and hit top top 5 🏆
Instead of doing a basic LED blink tutorial, I built an autonomous Edge AI rover, entered a national engineering competition, and placed in the Top 5 out of 30+ universities. 🤯
Here is what I built.
THIS GUY BUILT REAL FLYING SWORD DRONES AND CONTROLS THEM WITH HAND GESTURES
fan shisan is a physics student in chengdu who coded and built flying drones shaped like actual swords
he controls them entirely with hand gestures. no controller or a phone. just his hands
wave your hand and the sword follows. point and it flies where you direct it. multiple swords in the air at the same time responding to different gestures
he built the gesture recognition system HIMSELF and coded the flight control algorithms. designed the drone hardware in the shape of swords.
the gesture tracking uses sensors that read the position and movement of his hands in real time and translate them into flight commands for each drone independently
he even built one large enough to ride on
a physics student with coding skills just brought something straight out of a kung fu movie into the real world
the line between science fiction and side projects is getting thinner every month

Building your own robot just got a lot easier.
MathWorks have released an open-source GitHub repository packed with robotics resources for anyone interested in getting hands-on.
The repo includes examples for robot arms, ground vehicles, and drones, with projects that show how to connect with ROS and ROS2 or even deploy Simulink models directly as ROS nodes.
There are also more advanced demos, like modeling off-road environments and testing navigation algorithms in photorealistic simulations.
Everything is well-documented, with tutorials and links that make it easy to go from concept to prototype. 📑

What social platforms actually feel worth investing time into right now?
Embarrassingly, I’ve never really been a social media person. Long time lurker/introvert. X is basically me dipping my toes into the water. Of course I have LinkedIn, but I’m curious what other platforms people in tech genuinely use and enjoy.
Not just from a growth perspective necessarily. Most importantly to learn and be part of the community.

i come from a programming background, so i didn’t have strong physics/engineering mental models for biology
inspired by the Quant Bible from MIT, i created an equivalent for engineering in biology
