On 11 September, the Equatorial Guinea authorities unlawfully arrested Ahmed Soliman and Samson Birhane, accusing them of “breaking a mirror” at a hotel in Malabo, where the two had been arbitrarily held since they were unlawfully removed by the US to Equatorial Guinea earlier this year. Police officers covered the two men’s heads with a bag and beat them in their heads, backs and ribs.

Amnesty International believes that police officers targeted them in reprisal for reporting the authorities’ violent threats to coerce them to agree to return to their countries of origin. Since then, the two men have been held in an overcrowded police cell, in inhumane conditions, unable to speak to their lawyer.

The authorities must immediately release them, inform them of any charges against them and allow them unimpeded access to counsel.

The UN voted in favour of a resolution to formally phase out the commonly used 16th century Mercato world map. The resolution rightfully acknowledges that the map’s distortions contribute to a ‘symbolic minimisation’ of Africa, perpetuating historical biases. The resolution encourages governments, schools, tech companies and international organizations to use the Equal Earth projection going forward, which depicts Africa and other continents accurately. In the words of Togo’s foreign minister Robert Dussey who spearheaded the resolution, "a fair world begins with a fair map."

We welcome the UN committee’s affirmation that States have a duty to provide reparatory justice for the continuing harms of transatlantic chattel slavery. The human rights of Africans and people of African descent are continually impacted by the legacies of the slave trade, colonialism and chattel enslavement. States responsible for these injustices must repair the past and its enduring legacy as soon as possible.
