The argument sounds compelling, but it relies heavily on political analogies rather than demonstrating that the proposed solution would actually produce better governance. Comparing Uganda directly with Tanzania’s CCM or South Africa’s ANC oversimplifies very different political, institutional and economic circumstances.

Internal reform is important, but reform cannot simply mean changing personalities or replacing one faction with another. The real test is whether institutions become stronger: accountability, transparent party structures, merit-based appointments, effective public services, economic opportunity and credible mechanisms for addressing corruption.

Criticism should absolutely be welcomed—but criticism itself is not a reform programme. The serious question is: What specific reforms are being proposed, who implements them, what institutions enforce them, and how will citizens measure whether they worked?

Otherwise, “change or die” risks becoming another political slogan rather than the evidence-based diagnosis it claims to be... I beg to submit.

Ingrid, remind Ugandans—apart from social media activism and political tantrums—what measurable impact have you made on the country? Nations are built by solutions, not by outrage packaged as analysis. If you have facts, present them. If not, spare us the theatrics.

This argument creates a false choice between protecting Ugandans at home and contributing to international security abroad. A serious state can—and must—do both.

Being requested to contribute troops is not automatically an honour, but neither is it automatically evidence of exploitation. The relevant questions are whether the mission serves Uganda’s national interest, regional security, diplomatic influence and strategic objectives, and whether the deployment has a legitimate mandate, clear rules of engagement and proper protection for our personnel.

Uganda does not exist in a security vacuum. Terrorism, armed conflict, organized crime, refugee movements and instability across borders do not politely stop at immigration checkpoints. Sometimes defending Ugandans means confronting threats before they reach Uganda. Peace-support operations can therefore be an instrument of national security, not merely a favour to a “powerful country.”

And invoking human rights does not invalidate that strategic reality. Human rights, accountability and the welfare of our soldiers should absolutely be scrutinized—but they are arguments for responsible deployment and accountable government, not arguments for retreating from every international security responsibility.

The intellectually serious position is therefore not “foreign deployment bad” or “invitation equals honour.” It is: What is the mandate? What does Uganda gain strategically? What risks are our troops assuming? Who bears the costs? What safeguards exist, and does the mission advance Uganda’s national and regional security interests?

A country demonstrates sovereignty not by isolating itself, but by possessing the confidence and capability to decide where, when and why its forces serve. Uganda's military contribution to regional and international security should be judged on those merits—not reduced to a simplistic narrative that participation somehow means surrendering national dignity.

Strongly agreed. Public service should be judged on competence, sacrifice, integrity and performance—not on someone’s surname or family relationship. Being related to a President should neither automatically qualify a person for office nor automatically disqualify them.

If an individual has demonstrated ability, served the country, accepted difficult responsibilities and can deliver results, then the debate should focus on their record and suitability for the position. General Salim Saleh’s historical contribution to the NRA struggle and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s military career should be assessed on their actual records rather than dismissed simply because of family connections.

At the same time, public appointments must remain accountable and subject to scrutiny because public offices belong to Ugandans. The strongest answer to accusations of nepotism is therefore transparent merit, competence and measurable performance.

Criticize failure where it exists, demand accountability where it is necessary—but do not turn family association into an automatic verdict of incompetence. Judge people by what they have done, what they can do, and what they deliver for Uganda.

Today, at Speke Resort Munyonyo, I chaired the 2nd Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Troop-Contributing Countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). I pointed out that Uganda’s involvement in Somalia was never because we share a border, but out of principle and strategy. We rejected the extremism that seeks to impose itself on African societies and stood in solidarity with our brothers and sisters.

Africa has a rich history of respecting one another’s identity, and I remain confident that, through our collective efforts, we shall continue supporting Somalia’s journey towards lasting peace and stability. I thank the Troop-Contributing Countries and their leaders for their commitment and sacrifice in the pursuit of a peaceful and stable Somalia.

Politics isn't for shortcuts. Leadership is earned through grassroots engagement, building structures, and winning the trust of the people over time. If anyone wants to join politics, they should be prepared to compete on equal terms instead of expecting special treatment. Healthy competition strengthens democracy, and ultimately it's the voters who decide who leads.
