Huge thanks to everyone who joined us for @AmphoraeXVI this week. It was a delight to hear so many insightful papers and share in such diverse research, with the added joy of seeing UQ bustling with new and familiar faces!(Thread of thanks incoming…)
Thank you @AmphoraeXVI team for the wonderful conference and warm welcome to Brisbane. Thoroughly enjoyed my time and an in-person conference was the perfect way to cap off my time in academia.
Good morning everyone! Today is our last day at #AmphoraeXVI. We’re going to begin with a wonderful workshop on Material Culture as well as the last of our student presentations.
I’d like to give a shout out to ASCS Postgrad Reps @teganjoyy and @AhrenbergBryant for the great AGM today! As well as @joce_cpt for moderating out Postgrad Forum. #AmphoraeXVI may have been created by our lovely team at UQ but we’d like to thank everyone for your support.
Third day of #AmphoraeXVI, wonderful talks about Roman Imperialism and how the Empire Strikes Back, same-sex desire in antiquity and intellectualism in Classical Athens.
I enjoyed presenting @AmphoraeXVI yesterday but the best part was getting a question on whether I prefer Ovid or Virgil... surely that's obvious - Virgil didn't even make it into my title! 😂
Good morning! Day three of #AmphoraeXVI will commence with a range of wonderful student speakers, the Postgraduate Open Discussion Forum, and the AGM.
Tonight there will be an in-person dinner and an online trivia game so everyone can socialize and get to know one another!
We have our keynote coming up at 4pm with Dr. Kit Morrell titled ‘Reforming the Roman Republic’. Get your biscuits, get your tea and enjoy this afternoon. #AmphoraeXVI
Thanks to @JHUHumanities, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be offering a free, online course this summer about the intersecting worlds of J.R.R. #Tolkien & the #AncientMediterranean. Registration is open now, through the links below! #ClassicsTwitter
KLW notes how horrendous COVID has been for the creative arts, esp. live theatre - will there be another chance for #Phaedra (hopefully!)? KLW is asked about other Greek myths that appeal for adaptation - KLW has been considering a caravan park #Medea & also #Phaedra's pre-story.
KLW discusses the weight of all the other Phaedras & the play/s' continuous appeal; but also notes how appealing it is to deal with a complex passionate woman of a certain age. The complexity of the woman who is also a monster & a victim of abuse tied in with #metoo for KLW.
KLW's #Phaedra was inspired by a particular moment just after the 2019 federal election when Scott Morrison gloated “How good is Queensland?!” - the stimulus for a dystopian take on a wall-building seceded Queensland, inspired by a long history of eccentric political legacies.
