Just finished #CLAYFACE here are my takeaways
- Brilliant acting, Tom Rhys Harries puts in the performance of a LIFETIME
- Mike Flanagan wrote an incredibly complex character that the audience feels sympathetic yet for also uncomfortable around
- Great pacing on the film, no time is wasted it does not overstay its welcome and delivers at every minute
- PHENOMENAL storyline with BRILLIANT scares and twists
- I love that they embraced the fact that this is a VILLAIN film and not some anti hero stuff like Sony does
- DCU Gotham looks PERFECT, absolutely PERFECT
- Mike Flanagan wrote a BRILLIANT script and James Watkins delivered an AMAZING film
- If this is @JamesGunn’s DCU I CAN’T GET ENOUGH!!!
- This model of smaller budget character study film will go a long way, excited to see what other characters they do this with
- I predict a $300M plus Box Office
SOLID 9/10 it is a MUST WATCH in theaters

SPOILER!!!!!!!
So basically, Matt is a successful actor who gets brutally disfigured by Gotham mobsters and later on Scientist Dr. Caitlyn Corr treats him with experimental nanotech that restores his face but also gives him full shapeshifting powers then he becomes obsessed with her, goes on a revenge spree, k!lling the crime boss and others and eventually murders her fiancé, GCPD detective John Borrelli, then impersonates him.
In the final confrontation, if we can all remember, Caitlyn tasers him and he starts transforming into the classic monstrous Clayface form. At his own insistence, she hits the “kill switch” built into the nanites, then his body melts into sludge and drains into the Gotham sewers.
Everyone assumes he’s dead but later, Caitlyn gives money to a homeless man who does a little theatrical bow which the same gesture Matt used to make. It’s actually him, still alive and hiding out in the sewers (the nanites apparently evolved past the kill switch).
He goes back to his grim little hideout. The scene where Caitlyn shows up, they talk and they kiss is revealed to be an illusion, he actually created a clay replica of her and is role-playing a conversation with himself. Lol :(
He’s completely alone and delusional, he then fully shifts into his monstrous Clayface form and screams in agony.
It’s actually a pure tragic villain origin, the world thinks he’s gone, he can’t go back to his old life and he’s left as the unstable, shapeshifting monster living in the sewers but James Gunn has already said this isn’t the last we’ll see of Clayface in the DCU.
