The British introduced the English education system in 1854, the Madras Presidency College was established. A building was erected, and professors were brought in from Britain. But, few students reached college level.

The Tamil Brahmins of that time prayed before the Governor General that a Third Class be introduced as their children were not able to cross the minimum pass percentage of 45 percent. Realising the enormity of the problem, a Third Class was introduced and the pass percentage was brought down from 45 percent to 33 percent.

Look at the number of students who scored above 45% back then? Not even 6% of today's meritocrats ancestors could score above 45% despite having a much simpler curriculum when compared to today. Back then there was basic language skills, basic math and science were the only subjects. And how poorly they were performing.

It is the same or worse situtation for a child who is born in a family of daily wage earners, farmers, domestic workers, dalits, adivasis and so on. We expect them to score 90%, because our children score. Our children are able to score because a host of factors including our ancestory and how each generation kept on learning better and better.

The offsprings of the children that you look down upon also will learn and perform better. If you don't believe that, take a look at the mirror and think about your ancestors, and how horrible were they in school.

What we need is more compassion. Many of us are here and talking about meritocracy, because the Britisher's were compassionate towards our ancestors, because of which they 'passed' and got a Govt job. What we need is similar compassion and hold a helping hand to the unprivileged people around us.

We need every one to grow at 8% every year for the country to grow at 8%. So if you are a patriot and truly love India from the bottom of your heart and are in a position of privilege (which you already are), offer a helping hand to others. Don't look at their caste, religion, colour, gender. Help everyone equally!
