Good article! Agree there is an overemphasis on “marketing” math. My best sessions are when kids work hard to make sense of typically boring topics for them like rounding, subtraction w/regrouping, fractions. No context or fancy tasks. Kids still love it! https://t.co/cueATuKW0k
When you want to build number sense, use linear models like Candice's kids! Harder for our brain to make sense of 100 in 2 dimensions ("flat") and 1,000 in 3 dimensions (large cube). This is also why number lines are a better tool for building number sense than hundred chart!
It’s all about good judgment. Too much of this: “everyone has to give graded homework” or “nobody is allowed to give homework” or “worksheets are bad” or “open-ended problems are good” or “never give timed tests.” Can’t we do better than these extreme, all-or-nothing views?
Just attended an @gregtangmath workshop yesterday and look at what type of problem popped up in our skills review today! Immediate application! @Homer33c
@gregtangmath I introduced my kiddos to Kakooma this week and they LOVE it!!! Some even picked it as their activity of choice when they had some "U Pick" time. I do math intervention and Kakooma is a great and fun way to help increase fluency and fill those gaps. Thanks!
