Ten years into a 30-year mortgage you have paid off about 15 percent of what you borrowed. Not a third. Fifteen percent.

The schedule that does this was designed on purpose, by the US government, in 1933. And there's one line of arithmetic behind it that means no loan can ever surprise you again.

Here it is. Interest each month is only ever your remaining balance times your annual rate divided by 12. That's the entire rule. Whatever is left of your payment goes to principal.

Take a 300,000 dollar loan at 6.5 percent over 30 years. The payment is 1,896 dollars. In month one the balance is still the full 300,000, so the interest is 300,000 times 0.065 divided by 12. That's 1,625 dollars. Principal that month: 271 dollars.

You aren't being robbed. You're paying rent on money you still owe, and at the start you still owe all of it.

Run it forward and it gets heavy. After ten years you've paid about 182,000 dollars in interest and taken 45,672 off the balance. Half the balance isn't gone until month 257, more than twenty-one years in. Across the full term the interest comes to 382,633 dollars on a 300,000 dollar loan.

The same rule hands you the lever. Interest is charged on the balance, so anything that cuts the balance early removes interest from every month after it. On that same loan, an extra 200 dollars a month against principal ends it in 23 years instead of 30 and takes 103,449 dollars of interest off the total.

Do it on your own loan tonight. Balance times rate divided by 12 is this month's interest. What's left is what you actually bought.

Now the part almost nobody knows. In 1932 this loan did not exist. You put down half the price in cash, you paid interest only for about five years, and then the whole principal came due in one payment. Loans got rolled over again and again, and when the rollovers stopped in the early thirties people lost the houses.

What Washington built to replace that is the reason your first ten years look like this.

Physical buttons became touchscreens.

THE BIBLICAL CASE FOR WOMEN PASTORS

1. GOD PLACED A WOMAN IN APOSTOLIC MINISTRY—AN OFFICE SCRIPTURE RANKS FIRST IN THE CHURCH.

“Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellowprisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.”

“And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers…”

Ephesians 4:11 (KJV)
“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.”

The argument is devastatingly simple:

If a woman can occupy apostolic ministry, and God Himself places apostles first in the Church, you cannot construct a biblical rule saying that the same woman is inherently disqualified from pastoral ministry simply because she is a woman.

The burden is on the prohibitionist to explain how a woman may occupy apostolic ministry but is constitutionally incapable of pastoral ministry.

2. THE NEW TESTAMENT SHOWS A WOMAN TEACHING DOCTRINE TO A MALE MINISTER.

“Whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.”

And this wasn’t an ignorant man.

Apollos was:

“An eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures.”

Yet Priscilla participated in correcting his doctrine.

Therefore the sweeping proposition—

“A woman can never teach a man spiritual truth”

—is contradicted by the inspired historical record itself.

3. PRISCILLA WASN’T MERELY A WOMAN WHO TAUGHT ONCE—A CHURCH OPERATED IN HER HOUSE.

“Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus… Likewise greet the church that is in their house.”

Paul calls her his helper in Christ Jesus.

A church meets in their house.

She participates in doctrinal instruction.

This is unmistakably substantial New Testament ministry.

4. PAUL FORMALLY IDENTIFIES PHOEBE AS A MINISTER OF A SPECIFIC LOCAL CHURCH.

“I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea.”

The word is diakonos.

Paul uses the same word of himself:

Colossians 1:25 (KJV)
“Whereof I am made a minister…”

You cannot translate diakonos as meaningful ministry language when applied to Paul and then automatically drain it of ministerial significance when applied to Phoebe.

She is specifically identified with “the church which is at Cenchrea.”

5. WOMEN SPOKE SUPERNATURALLY TO THE ASSEMBLED CHURCH WITH GOD’S APPROVAL.

“But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth…”

What does prophecy do?

1 Corinthians 14:3 (KJV)
“But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.”

Those are pastoral activities.

Paul doesn’t tell women:

“You cannot prophesy.”

He regulates how they do it.

Therefore any interpretation of Paul’s later instruction about women remaining silent must harmonize with Paul’s explicit acknowledgment that women prayed and prophesied in the Church.

6. THE HOLY GHOST HIMSELF EMPOWERS WOMEN TO SPEAK FOR GOD.

“Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy… And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.”

This isn’t a concession to twenty-first-century culture.

This is Pentecost.

The distinguishing feature of the last-days outpouring is that God’s Spirit rests upon sons and daughters, servants and handmaidens, and they speak under divine empowerment.

7. PAUL EXPLICITLY CALLS WOMEN HIS FELLOW LABOURERS IN GOSPEL MINISTRY.

Paul doesn’t describe them merely as women who attended his meetings.

They:

The two restriction texts and the “husband of one wife” clause do not do the work complementarians need them to do.

This is the load-bearing argument. If 1 Timothy 2:12 and 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 are timeless, creation-order bans on women teaching or holding authority over men, the nine texts above have to be demoted to exceptions. Egalitarians reverse the priority: the breadth of the canon interprets the two hard paragraphs, not the other way around.
• 1 Timothy 2:11–12. The verb authentein appears nowhere else in the New Testament. Paul had exousiazo if he meant ordinary, legitimate authority. Many evangelical egalitarians (Payne, Westfall, Belleville) argue authentein in contemporary usage carries a hostile sense — to dominate, usurp, or steamroll. Paul writes in the present tense: “I am not permitting,” the language of a current directive, not “God never permits.” The setting is Ephesus: false teaching already in circulation (1 Timothy 1:3–7; 4:1–3), women who need to learn first (2:11 — itself a radical elevation in that culture), and a city whose patron goddess Artemis was a female origin-myth. Verses 13–15 then correct a local distortion of the creation story, not install a permanent teaching ban. The same Paul who writes this commends Priscilla, Phoebe, and Junia without a footnote telling them to stop.
• 1 Corinthians 14:34–35. Read against 11:5, this cannot mean “women may never speak.” The immediate context is disorder in the evaluation of prophecy. “Ask their husbands at home” shows the target is married women interrupting the meeting, not every woman in every church forever. Some scholars also note the verses jump around in the manuscript tradition, which at least flags how oddly they sit in the flow.
• “Husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:6). The Greek is mias gynaikos andra — a one-woman man. It is a character idiom for sexual fidelity, the same kind of idiom as “wife of one husband” for the enrolled widow in 1 Timothy 5:9. It is not a neat “males only” lock. Verse 1 says “if anyone [tis] aspires.” 1 Timothy 3:11 most naturally reads as women deacons, not merely “deacons’ wives,” and Phoebe is already called diakonos. If the fidelity idiom disqualifies women, it also disqualifies Paul and Jesus, who were unmarried. The list is about proven character in a household-coded world, not a chromosomal prerequisite.
