@nicolepjones2 As a new teacher, I've realized success is only achieved when you collaborate. Great teaching is the result of collaborating bc we all have the same end goal in mind-to change young minds to become strong readers! (Or writers) #HCPSRead
A5. Assessment gives us the chance to impact Ss literacy so they can become their own teachers- they understand the learning intentions, they seek feedback, and they know what to do when they get stuck...its VISIBLE to them; it's only achieved if we assess. #HCPSRead
A3. We don't want our Ss retelling to memorize. We want them to retell for understanding which means it's ok to look back in the text. Also, I thought it was insightful to see that retelling is only a 'basic measure of comprehension bc it's told on a personal level. #HCPSRead
A1. We must make an effort to discuss the 4 q's listed on p.170 at our PLCs and meet regularly - talk about what's not working and how we can support our students in areas of weaknesses or change our instruction. I love the formula for calculating the effect size too! #HCPSRead
Hello guys! Amy from Creekside Charter Academy - I can't believe this is our last chat. I have learned so much from this book and can't wait to spead the word to others! #HCPSRead
A4. We need to model, conference, and have purpose when having our Ss independently write. The expectations (rubric) needs to be there, relevancy, and purpose so they feel invested. #HCPSRead
@LiannaAlexande Great perspective; fluency is like a blueprint to a building. If you dont have the foundation down, the building won't be 'strong'. It will have detours that leave the person feeling confused. This is like fluency; without it, you can't build strong readers! #HCPSRead
A3. Fluency has many layers to it. It's not about how fast you read.... Repeated readings are powerful and highly effective bc it builds automaticity, usage of expression, & comprehension. Ss NEED to have fluency so they can develop into strong readers! #HCPSRead
A2. I think Ss need to use vocabulary words they learned and find the words embeded in texts. When Ss contextualize, they will retain the words. They can also play word games to build vocabulary. I did a class word jar last year & Ss loved it! #HCPSRead
@SarahESchafer I love what you said here; planning lessons that 'flow' for your Ss requires a layered approach - knowing your Ss, what's relevant, what do they know, and what's that zone slightly above their skill set that will challenge them a little more? #HCPSRead
A1. Ind. learning allows our Ss to be strong, strategic readers bc they're using strategies independently that works for them & form reading identities; how empowering. Flow allows a 'balance' between 'skill' & 'challenges'. One can't embrace challenges w/o skills. #HCPSRead
A5. The T is the facilitator (check-ins,modeling,creating routines/learning intentions). The Ss role is to think visibly and verbalize this with their peers. #HCPSRead
