I love Fox and Krystal's togetherness and partnership so much because she represents something Fox's technological, mercenary, fire-danger-red existence doesn't: ancientness, intuition, ritual, an organic world, and the almost-supernatural. Fox, too, offers her something equally complementary after the loss of Cerinia: stability, modernity, companionship, and eventually the possibility of a found family and home after the tragedy of Cerinia's doom.
There's also an incredibly poignant idea in imagining James looking at the kit in this artwork without knowing any of that. Parents know their children only at one point on a road whose destination neither can see. James could never know who Fox would become, and that little Fox couldn't know who he'd someday meet - the image of Fox and Krystal together supplies what should be the conclusion to the first: The kit who once sat in his father's lap eventually has someone sitting in his 🥺
Orange and blue. Machine and mystic. Cornerian and Cerinian. Two histories that had absolutely no reason to intersect but nevertheless did anyway 😭
