There was a time when I blamed Rochester.

The streets.
The poverty.
The violence.
The people I surrounded myself with.

It was easier that way.

Easier to point at the neighborhood than the man in the mirror.

The truth is, the 19th Ward didn’t make my decisions for me.

I did.

Some of those decisions cost me years of my life.
Some cost me relationships.

Some cost me opportunities I’ll never get back.
And that’s a hard thing to admit.

Because accountability doesn’t come with excuses.

From the 19th Ward: The Making of a Resilient Man isn’t a story about a man who had everything figured out.

It’s about a kid who got lost.

A young father who wasn’t ready.

A son who watched his family fall from stability into survival.

A young man who traded potential for poor choices.

And a man who finally learned that resilience isn’t about what you’ve been through it’s about what you choose to become because of it.

I wrote this for the people carrying regrets.
For the ones rebuilding after mistakes.
For the fathers trying to get it right.

For the men and women who know what it’s like to feel stuck between who they were and who they’re trying to become.

I’m not asking anyone to buy a book.

But if you know someone who needs proof that a bad chapter doesn’t have to become the whole story, send this to them.

Every block has a story.
Every prison cell has a story.
Every scar has a story.
And this one is mine.

@DonahueMeg If they do it, it will be shorter-lived than if they don’t. I’m in Ohio, startling how far ahead this state is compared to rest of US. Governor speaks orders, which are immediate and definitive. Then White House comes on and the answers to journalists’ questions are Ummm Well Hmm
